Today @ 7pm EST we’re finishing our free 4-part Salsa Zoom series by commemorating one of the roots of Salsa! For this last Zoom Salsa session, we’ll be teaching one of the basic steps of Afro-cuban Rumba within a Salsa context, and practicing it to Rumba breaks in Salsa music. . . This session highlights and emphasizes the Afro-Cuban roots of Salsa. Cuban Rumba (its 3 main styles being Yambu, Guaguanco & Columbia) predates Salsa, and has had a central influence on the rhy...thmical makeup of Salsa music. The clave that sets the tempo in Salsa comes directly from Rumba, and the conga rhythms in Rumba were later adapted to give us the heartbeat of Salsa. Make no mistake, Salsa music would not exist without the African influence in Cuba. . . Sharing this post here about one of the overlooked pioneers of Salsa music. Let's be clear: Salsa & Bachata music would not exist without the black diaspora. Even if it makes us uncomfortable, we do not live in isolation from everything that is happening. We are a collective. We can't just take what we like and ignore what we don't. As a multi-cultural society, social justice affects us all.
