HURON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY EXHIBIT NOW AT THE CO-OP GALLERY IN GODERICH. The Huron County Historical Society now has a display tower in the Co-Op Gallery..., 54 Courthouse Square, Goderich (lower level of the building). Images attached of the tower display exhibits about photography, as the 2020 issue of ‘Huron Historical Notes’ focused on pre 1914 photographers in four Huron County communities Goderich, Seaforth, Blyth and Brussels with Part 2 about photographers in other County communities to follow in a future issue. Issues of the ‘Notes’ and repro postcards with Huron County historical scenes are available for purchase. Drop by when in town, and also have a gander at local art items on display and for sale. Kudos to Rhea Hamilton Seeger for taking on the co-ordinator role of this HCHS exhibit, which will have changing displays as time goes by! See more

SB-342 FALLS ON THE MAITLAND, NEAR GODERICH The near caption on any postcard invariably drives postcard collectors around the bend, as postcard publishers had... a consistent habit during the ‘golden age of postcards’ (1900-1914) to reissue postcards with a near caption, with numerous geographic variants, that were of course nowhere near where it was purported to be. However, in this case, the Stedman Bros postcard image (SB-342) ‘The Falls on the Maitland near Goderich’ is correct it is actually at Benmiller. The real photo postcard with the caption ‘Maitland Falls, Benmiller’ (considered to be Sallows) has a similar view of this falls, as does the Sallows photo with the mis-spelled hand written notation of ‘Becklers Mills Falls, Benmiller’. An historical discussion of this falls, and the Baechler-Platt sawmill and dam operation here, can be found in John Hazlitt & Ted Turner’s book ‘The Power of the Maitland’ (pp 13-15). John H. tells me that the images were taken from the west, or Goderich side of the river. See more
