With both departments (Victoria & Salmon Cove / Perry’s Cove) adding new members to our ranks, proper training for these members is critical for success on the ...fireground. These members are committed to their training and are focused on completing the NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level One course. This course is the building block for all Fire training in North America. Our course is broken into a mix of 4 weekends (8 hrs per day) along with weekly Thursday evenings (3 hrs a sitting). Currently they are on their second weekend. The final weekend they will be conducting live fire training at the Training Ground in Winterton. Special thank you to our instructors & students for taking the time to ensure you receive high quality instruction. #yourfireservice #vvfd1975 #professionallystaffedbyvolunteers See more

Don’t take chances - Just because it looks frozen, doesn’t mean it is! Ice needs to be checked for the thicknesses below to safely enjoy winter activities, but remember our weather is also a big factor in the ice conditions. When it’s not safe, don’t go!

Public Advisory: ‘Tis the Season to Practice Fire Safety Justice and Public Safety December 24, 2020... Once a week during December, the Department of Justice and Public Safety is issuing a Public Advisory to ensure residents keep fire safety top-of-mind as they celebrate the holidays. The ‘Tis the Season to Practice Fire Safety campaign is all about protecting yourself and your family this holiday season. Christmas is known as ‘The Most Wonderful Time of the Year’ and sharing in cooking and baking makes it that much better. Safe practices while cooking this holiday season include: * Keep anything flammable at a safe distance from sources of heat; * Do not leave your stovetop or oven unattended when in use; * Use a timer to help you keep track of your cooking or baking; * Do not cook if you are impaired by alcohol or drugs; * If you do choose to deep fat fry your food, only use a thermostat-controlled fryer to ensure the fat doesn’t get too hot; * Always use a fire extinguisher on a grease fire; never use water. * When choosing a fire extinguisher, look for the label of an independent testing laboratory such as ULC or UL; * A multi-purpose extinguisher for class A-B-C- fires would be a great choice; If food catches fire in your oven, turn off the heat and ensure the door remains closed; * Keep a lid nearby when cooking in case it is needed to smother very small grease fire. Cover the pan, turn off the stovetop, don’t move it and leave it alone until it cools; and * If you have any doubt, get out, stay out and call 911. Follow @JPS_GovNL on Twitter for more holiday safety tips. The Department of Justice and Public Safety wishes all residents a safe and happy holiday season. 30 Media contact Danielle Barron Justice and Public Safety 709-729-5188, 691-2944 [email protected]

Public Notice Due to COVID-19 and in order to allow for social distancing our parade will be a little different this year. The Town Truck, Salmon Cove/Perry's ...Cove fire trucks and Santa will be the ONLY ones in the parade. We know this may be a disappointment, but it will allow us to travel more routes around town and allow people to see Santa at a safe distance. The parade will start at Persalvic school at 2:00 PM on Dec 19 and travel all main routes through Town. The fire hall will be open for anyone wishing to drop off non perishable items for the food bank. Thank You for your understanding.

Yesterday evening crews responded to yet another MVC involving a ATV. We would like to stress the importance of all atv operators to follow the laws under the H...ighway Traffic Act. Please wear the appropriate safety equipment and ensure that if you are riding at night your lights are on. In addition it would also be a great idea to place reflective decals on your vehicle and wear reflective clothing. Let’s make this holiday season safe and enjoyable for all of us. Merry Christmas! In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.... We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. - Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McRae Lest we forget. https://youtu.be/Olb5GJ4kBW4

As you may already know, on Thursday morning we received a emergency call of a Structure Fire with a individual trapped inside. Crews of both Victoria & Salmon ...Cove/Perry's Cove Fire Departments arrived on scene in record time ready to battle the beast. The fire was knocked down using all textbook techniques. The incident carried a high level of stress but every firefighter carried out their duties without hesitation. To command such a complex incident with a very well trained, professional & compassionate group of firefighters has not been taken for granted. Although the incident did not end up with the result we desired each one of you gave it your all. I have no hesitation gearing up to go on any other emergency with any one of you. I would like to thank every Firefighter, Fire department, The NL Association of Fire Services, Mayor Barry Dooley, Town Councilors, MHA Steve Crocker and all other residents for reaching out via phone calls, social media and/or sending prayers regarding the incident. This means a lot to each one of us. Special thank you to Carbonear Fire Department for cleaning our turnout gear after the incident. This ensures the carcinogens along with other debris are cleaned from it. Putting it back in service for next use. I would like to thank both Pastor Jarvis & Major Dwayne Ledrew for the Critical Incident Stress Management debriefing. Condolences to the family & friends of the deceased. Please keep them in your prayers. We greatly appreciate everyone's help during & after the incident, Justin Parsons Fire Chief Victoria Fire

This year to date we have accumulated a total of 976 volunteer hours between our 16 members. That’s an average of 61 hours per volunteer. We also took a 2 month break when instructed to do so by health officials. Out of 17 emergency calls in total including Victoria, 8 have been in our fire departments jurisdiction including: 2 serious atv/motorcycle accidents, 1 brush fire, 1 child reported swept out to sea, and a potentially fatal gas leak. We also responded to a vacant str...ucture fire and a fatal house fire in Victoria. Let's hope we are able to call it a year in serious emergencies in our town and our neighbouring towns, but we know the difference. Congratulations and a job well done to all volunteer firefighters who make it possible and gets the job done safety, respectfully and properly every time. Fire Chief Zach Slade

We are very grateful to add our new Holmatro Portable Hydraulic Pump with twin hoses to our vehicle extrication equipment. This pump with its newer technology, ...is faster, lighter and more portable than our previous unit. It is also capable of running two tools simultaneously. The portability and light weight of the unit allows us to reach any vehicle, for any extrication. Although we hope to never use it, it will be aboard E245 waiting to serve. A Special thank you to the Town of Victoria & The Province for cost sharing the equipment. #Holmatro #GovNL #vvfd1975 #staysafe

As we watch and prepare for Hurricane Teddy over the next couple of days. Now is a good time to check on your emergency kit. Do you have one? Does it need a few... things? Have you been meaning to start one but haven't gotten around to it? Some people may be wondering what goes into a emergency kit. In an emergency, you will need some basic supplies. You may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. Water at least two litres of water per person per day; include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order Food that won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (replace food and water once a year) Manual can-opener Crank or battery-powered flashlight (and extra batteries). Replace batteries once a year. Crank, battery-powered radio (and extra batteries) First aid kit Extra keys to your car and house Some cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills A copy of your emergency plan and contact information If applicable, other items such as prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities, or food, water and medication for your pets or service animal (personalize according to your needs) Two additional litres of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning Candles and matches or lighter (place candles in deep, sturdy containers and do not burn unattended) Change of clothing and footwear for each household member Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each household member Toiletries Hand sanitizer Utensils Garbage bags Toilet paper Water purifying tablets Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, work gloves, dust mask, pocket knife) A whistle (in case you need to attract attention) Duct tape (to tape up windows, doors, air vents, etc.) If you think your water is contaminated, check with your municipality or local authorities for details. When in doubt, do not drink water you suspect may be contaminated. Keep some cash on hand, as automated bank machines and their networks may not work during an emergency. You may have difficulty using debit or credit cards.

#doededeurdicht www.doededeurdicht.be See more

Watch this stunning video of a home fire in a suburb of Denver, Colorado. It is a drastic illustration of the need for smoke alarms (early warning), fire sprink...lers (early suppression), and an escape plan - especially where high-risk residents (young children, elderly, disabled) are present. "We went from celebrating a birthday to chaos in minutes. Grateful everyone survived," stated one of the occupants.
