How often should you wash your hair? Choppable, dyable and stylable, hair is a vital part of identity for many people, and learning to care for it can take years of trial and error. And when it comes down to how often to wash it, many of us are left bewildered. Shampoo wasn’t widely used until the early twentieth century, and the moment it started to become embedded in daily routines can be pinned to the rise of consumerism and a New York Times column which advised women to w...Continue reading

The Hair Color Everyone's Getting This Summer It's finally summer, so let's take a moment to celebrate the best things about the season: Taking vacations with your loved ones, eating ice cream sandwiches, and trying out new hairstyles. So it's a good thing there's a new color on the hair scene: bronde. Yes, it looks like a typo, but "bronde" is actually a combo term for a dye job that mixes blonde and brown shades together.... Less intense than ombre hair yet more impactful than simple blonde streaks, this look is all over Pinterest hair inspo boards right now. So, how do you make it work for you? If you have darker hair and a tan skin tone, ask for golden, multidimensional tones. But if you're paler, ash tones will look great. Either way, just make sure the contrast isn't too far from your roots. If you're not ready to take the all-over bronde color plunge, try face-framing highlights in warmer tones like gold, honey, caramel, and cognac. Keeping your color bright around your face and darker at the crown and back is the key to natural, sun-kissed hair. Plus, it mimics the way the sun will lighten your hair as well. Which leads us to the other bonus of this new hair color technique: It's low-maintenance. You won't get the high-contrast dark roots that come from dyeing your hair totally blonde or the straight-across root line that shows up when you go full-on vibrant red or brown. Similar to the foilyage trend, bronde hair keeps your roots looking natural as they grow in, making upkeep less urgent each month. Plus, you'll look sun-kissed and glamorous. We'd call that a win win.

Breakable rule/myth #5. Cover your grays, or cut your hair short. WRONG. Silver hair is striking and beautiful, and it only ages you if you let it, so rock it with confidence. Why not let your grays grow in and be a sparkling silver vixen? Longer hair on older, silver clients looks great! The idea that a pixie is the standard for the over 60 crowd is outdated and irrelevant in these modern times.

Breakable rule/myth #4-You need to shampoo your hair daily. WRONG. Shampooing is an ingrained part of the personal grooming habits of Canadian women. But, a few years ago, people started discussing that we (gasp!) may not need shampoo at all. At first, we were shocked and skeptical. Then, it all started to make sense. Most of us grew up shampooing every day to have squeaky-clean hair. As we now know, this only dries your natural oils and makes you overproduce sebum, making you greasier faster!

Breakable rule/myth #3-Red hair doesn’t go with certain skin tones. WRONG. Some clients carry outdated ideas about themselves. A stylist told them 20 years ago that they could never have red hair. But, if they tried it, being a redhead could bring out a whole new them! There are many theories about who can and can’t dye their strands red with what skin tone. There are thousands of shades of red out there to choose from, and the magic of a good hairstylist is that they know how to blend and customize them to find the perfect one to suit you. Whether you’re going for a hue to complement your skin tone, or to make a statement, we want you to know this: Yes, you have the pros’ permission to be a redhead if you want to be one.

Breakable rule/myth #2-If you have a baby face, you can’t wear bangs. WRONG. Many of you had bangs as kids, cut by your parents in a desperate effort to keep your hair out of your eyes. This memory can bring on a healthy fear of fringe. If you have a round face, the anti-bangs sentiment could get even stronger. The great news is, bangs come in many forms. In fact, they can look quite sophisticated. Any haircut can be customized to fit any face shape by an experienced and skilled stylist. Yes, this applies to bangs! And, if you’re still nervous, start with a light side-sweep or curtain bangs.

This week we will be sharing some old hair rules/myths that can be broken. #1-Big girls can’t wear short hair. WRONG. Don’t let your body shape keep you from your dream pixie. If short hair makes you feel great, then you will wear it beautifully and with confidence. Besides, you can rock anything with the right attitude. People make all kinds of excuses for why they can’t do things that they truly want to do. Our job as hairdressers is to translate whatever style you want and make it work for you. You can wear a pixie you just have to own it.

SBH Tip of the Week: The same rules generally apply for medium length hair as they do for long hair when it comes to haircut frequency. Regular haircuts at 6 to 12 week intervals are very important to keep your hair healthy in appearance. If you like the length of your hair, a trim every 6-8 weeks will keep your hair at your preferred length. If you are growing your hair out, opt for a trim every 8 to 12 weeks instead.

SBH Tip of the week: How Often Should You Cut Your Hair? Knowing how often to cut your hair has a lot to do with your hair goals and the chemical processes you put your hair through on a regular basis. It's important to know that hair grows on an average of one half inch every four weeks. Of course, some people's hair grows a little faster and some grows a little slower. If your hair is long, and you want to keep it long, it is very important to get regular haircuts in order ...to keep your long hair healthy looking. Long hair is very old. Like anything that ages, the older your hair gets, the more fragile it is. Long hair is typically more susceptible to breakage, split ends, and to appearing thinner. If you color or highlight your long hair, it is even more likely to have damage. Regular haircuts will help keep your hair strong and healthy. Long hair should be trimmed at least every 8 to 12 weeks. If you notice more breakage or split ends, it could be cut as frequently as every 6 to 8 weeks. Be specific with your hair stylist when you're getting your haircut. If you'd like your hair to grow longer, ask your stylist to trim a half an inch or less off the ends. If you'd like your hair to stay the same length, you'll want to ask her to trim more off the ends. Remember, hair grows one half inch per four weeks. Take that into consideration when talking to your stylist about how much hair to cut off. Follow us on Twitter @salonbelhair See more

SBH Tip of the week: April showers bring more than just May flowers. They also add constantly changing moisture levels in the air. The problem? Frizz is caused by hair trying to soak in moisture from the air, so chances are you’ll end up with a frizz problem at some point during springtime shifts in the weather. If you find that blowdrying makes your hair look frizzier, gently blot it dry with a towel instead but don’t rub. Rubbing hair dry can cause further breakage on already weak strands, increasing your chances of frizz. After you've towel-blotted, apply an anti-frizz serum or hair gel to your damp hair and comb it through so the product is distributed evenly. Finally, consider keeping a little product on hand throughout the day to use for smoothing down any strands that may curl up.

SBH Tip of the week: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of April/May not to mention creating some massive flyaways! Windy gusts grab at split ends and create the static-y look, and damaged or naturally coarse hair has it worse because they have rougher hair cuticles, giving the breeze something to hold onto. Windy times call for hair accessories: headbands, ponytails and clips are a must. Also try products specially formulated for blustery days which tame and smooth unruly tresses while conditioning frazzled ends.

SBH Tip of the week: Spring’s influx of humid weather can leave hair flat and squelch even the most zealous efforts at styling. No matter what texture your hair has naturally, this isn’t the time of year to force your tresses into an unnatural style. If your hair is curly, find a 'do that embraces your curls. If your hair is straight but tends to curl up in humid weather, incorporate loose, light curls into your style. Consider applying a humidity-resistant product to towel-dried hair for added humidity protection.
