Tara Galpin of The Salty Hive and Milo Stuart of Rainwalk Design are doing their part to ensure honey bee survival with their Trees for Bees program. As a beekeeper on Salt Spring Island, we have to feed colonies a lot of sugar water, and this is not a sustainable practice. This includes *giving away* 300 pollinator trees to Salt Spring locals. www.saltine.ca/s/plant-trees-for-bees-salt-spring-island-bc

We interviewed Larkin from Forest Heart Botanicals and discussed not only plant knowledge, but community building: "I’m deeply in love with the close connection with nature that rural life affords me. We have a pretty special community here too. There’s so much love, care, and space for relationship. It’s not perfect, but it feels like one of the most queer-positive places someone could live rurally in Canada. That’s important. I hope it can become even more so. We need spaces where we can feel safe and be in connection with nature. We deserve that. So do BIPOC communities. I really want that for them as well."
Be honest: how many times a week do you zip out of bed early to snag one of the cinnamon buns from Northend Farm before they sell out? These gooey rolls of goodness are a local favourite on Salt Spring Island.

Food for Thought: Backyard Foraging with Lisa Apfelbaum Salt Spring is known for its abundant farms, but there is also plenty of wild food to be found on the island. Back in March, local permaculturist and chef Lisa Apfelbaum started up a #wildfoodwednesdays series on social media to help SSI families supplement their food security through wild crafting (the practice of harvesting plants from their natural habitats for food or medicinal purposes). We caught up with Lisa to find out about sustainable wild crafting on Salt Spring, what wild plants can be found over the summer, and her favourite recipe to make with the harvest (hint: it’s sweet and you’ll never have leftovers).
