Artist Noon Hour Talk today! 2019/20 SSNAP Finalist Rhys Edwards Vancouver, BC "Interest in the affective powers of ordinary materials, and the alchemy of the...ir renderings." October 11, 2019 @ Noon Rhys Edwards is a critic, artist, and curator. His works employ classical and academic methods in the pursuit of anti-representation. They engender an obsession with the appearance of forms, and how drawing and painting compel us to pay attention to these forms. He has written for Canadian Art, 7x7, The Capilano Review, and BC Studies, and in 2014 he was awarded the C Magazine New Critics prize. In 2015, he co-founded the AgentC Gallery with artist Debbie Tuepah in the Newton region of Surrey. He graduated with a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2013, and lives in Vancouver. Artist Noon Hour Talk today! 2019/20 SSNAP Finalist Dorian Melton Duncan, BC // www.Melton.ca "I seek the inner, hidden beauty in naturally occurring textures ...in geological formations." October 9, 2019 @ Noon As a graphic artist, illustrator and fine artist, I have worked in a fairly traditional fashion for most of my life. My approach to art has been quite conventional, beginning with observation, followed by drawing or painting using traditional media: pencil, paints, etc. Recently, after experiencing a years-long gap in my personal artistic production, my inner creative magnetic north demonstrated that it had shifted significantly. Since moving to Vancouver Island from Toronto in 2017, my attention has been drawn to the expressive potential of natural textures found in my local environment. Rocks, scrap building materials, rust and even cracks in pavement seem to compel me to capture an image, even though the end result of the process cannot yet be visualized. The textures in the reference photos that I take only begin to reveal their secrets after I spend time experimenting with the tools available in my digital studio.
