Virgil Van Dijk ACL tear Part 1 VVK has been touted as one of the best defenders in the world, and last week in a game against Everton suffered a rupture. He was injured in the 5th minute following a challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. As we can see in the video there is significant contact during the tackle.... Looking at the current information in the literature, soccer players have a incidence rate of 0.15-3.67% of ACL injuries, and it is more common in (2-3x) female soccer players. The role of the ACL is to stabilize anterior movement of the tibia on the femur. Most common mechanism injury to the ACL is due to shear force at the proximal (top) end of the tibia causing anterior movement. Their is significant rehabilitation with ACL injuries and return to play is approximately greater then 9 months in some cases. In a recent study completed by UEFA clubs, ACL tears have a median absence of 205 days. Even though ACL rupture is the diagnosis with the longest absence among common football injury diagnoses, the median RTP is still shorter than the 912 months. In fact, less than 15% of the players suffering an ACL injury in the study (25 out of 183 ACL injuries) had a period of absence exceeding 9 months (270 days). ACL injury had a re-rupture rate of only 6.6% in this study population. This is why it is important that the rehabilitation program is comprehensive and the a player of VVK status comes back fully fit to lead his club and national team once again. In part 2, we will go over what a treatment/rehab program may look like of course of 9-12 months of an ACL injury. MCL Injury Nick Chubb sustained a MCL injury in week 4 for the Cleveland Browns. Chubb was the RB1 for the potent running game for the Browns, which also included Kareem Hunt. The duo combined to lead the league in rushing. MCL injury commonly results from lateral trauma to the knee, resulting in a valgus stress.... It can also occur with external rotation of the foot with a flexed knee. As we can see in this case, the Dallas player falls on to the lateral side of the knee when Chubb is running. That significant impact causes him to fall and clutch his injured leg. During physical examination, the examiner commonly uses the values stress test to determine an injury to the MCL. The test is performed with examiners hand above the lateral thigh, and other below, with gentle outward force. The knee is assessed in full extension and with 30 degrees flexion (this isolates the MCL). It is then graded 1 (<5mm) ,2 (5-10mm) ,3 (>10mm) depending on the joint line opening compared to the unaffected side. The patient is initially placed in a brace to help the ligament reduce stress and improve the healing process for the first 1-2 week intervals. The patient also commences rehabilitation to help strengthen the knee joint and surrounding knee structures. In football players, the return to play time for grade 1 and 2 injuries of the MCL is an average time of 20 days. In grade 1 injuries, it may average 10-11 days post injury, and 20 days for grade 2 injuries. Can the Browns continue to be a potent run heavy offence without Nick Chubb? Dak Prescott Season Ending Ankle Fracture Dak Prescott was having a sensational start to the 2020 NFL football season but suffered a season ending ankle injury against the Giants in week 5. He was making a run when he got tackled from behind and had his foot turn and collapse causing him to have a compound ankle fracture and dislocation. It is an external rotation and pronation injury that occurred causing the inside/medial portion of the ankle to dislocate. The tibia s...its on the talus, and that excessive rotation causes that area to collapse and cause dislocation. This causes the deltoid ligament to tear. It is assumed he may have torn the ligament between the fibula and tibia, the interossesoues ligament and other ligaments and soft tissue injuries surrounding the joint. He was immediately taken to hospital and surgery was completed. It has been reported that Dak had a open fracture meaning that the piece of bone was outside of the skin. It is also reported that the bone(s) were broken into multiple pieces. Which further complicates the procedure and recovery period. It is a difficult injury which occured to Gordon Hayward and Alex Smith, and both players have returned back to playing the sport they love and we all are hoping for a speedy recovery for Dak. #movementlab #sandherchiropractic #knowyourbody

Hamstring strain Austin Ekeler was poised for another big year as the lead running back in the Chargers offence and also a RB1 in NFL Fantasy. In week 4, he suffered a significant injury that will sideline him for an extended period of time. As we can see in the play, it happened at the end of the play when Ekeler was pushed out of bounds, causing his leg to fully extend. He immediately went to grab the back of his hamstring, and was unable to put any weight on his leg and... carted off. All indications from the Chargers staff is he suffered a grade 2/3 hamstring strain. The hamstring is in the posterior thigh and has 3 muscles: semitendinous, semimembranosus, and bicep femoris. They start at the bottom of the pelvis at the ischial tuberosity and cross the knee joint and attache to the lower leg. In the NFL 1998 to 2007, there were 2.2 hamstring strain injuries per 1000 athlete exposures in training camp, second only to knee sprains. The recurrence rate of hamstring strains has been reported to be 30% in professional Australian football and 12% in professional soccer players. There have been 2 types of acute hamstring strains 1Type I acute hamstring strains occur during high-speed running (commonly injuring the long head of the bicep femoris). 2Type II hamstring strains occur in the setting of excessive lengthening of the hamstrings (commonly injuring the semimembranosus close to the ischial tubersoity and longer recovery). 3Lastly there is a proximal hamstring strain, which occurs as a chronic overload injury. This occurs commonly to the semimembranosus muscle. Return to play: 1Type 1- mean of 16 weeks in a study with elite sprinters 2Type 2- a mean of 50 weeks in a study with prof. dancers Studies shown a mean from 8-25 days lost from full training to competition in NFL and prof. rugby players. Will the Chargers be able to make strides forward without their star running back? Tag a friend and comment below! #movementlab #sandherchiropractic #knowyourbody Source: Chu SK, Rho ME. Plantar Fascia Tear Miami Heat not only lost game one of the NBA Finals but also lost their top scorer and x-factor in Goran Dragic to a left plantar fascia tear. He suffered the injury after stepping on the foot of Rajon Rondo as seen in the video above. The plantar fascia is dense band of connective tissue that runs on the bottom surface of our foot from the heel to the toes. It is the stabilizer of the arch and also helps with shock absorption. It is crucial for perfor...ming activities like running and jumping. Most commonly, we are familiar with plantar fasciitis which is the condition when the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, causing a burning sensation into the bottom of the foot. Risk factors for a rupture is prior plantar fasciitis, running, and corticosteroid injections. After injections the risk of rupture has been reported to be 2.4% to 10%. When the rupture occurs, patients report a pop sound that occurs and sudden pain by the medial calcaneaus. A plantar fascia tear is a more difficult injury, which causes a parital tear or rupture of the fascia, it is a n injury which sidelined Malcom Brogdon during the 2018-19 Season. It also occurred to Joe Johnson in game 2 of the 2013 playoffs, he would go on to play with an injection every game but not perform to his standards. In this case, it will be dependent on the severity of the tear and how the player responds to rehabilitation and therapy. It can vary from 3 weeks to a year. Will the Heat come back to tie the series at 2-2 tonight?
