International students who are admitted before October 1, 2018 to one-year entry-level certificate programs, and post-graduate certificate and diploma programs that are not on the Alberta Opportunity Stream List will still be considered for the AINP as long as they meet all other requirements. Students who are admitted on or after October 1, 2018 to one of these programs will not be eligible to apply to the AINP with a Post-Graduation Work Permit. They can still apply to the program if they are able to secure a Labour Market Impact Assessment-based work permit. They also continue to have an option to apply to the Express Entry stream.

EXPRESS ENTRY DRAW APPLICANTS WITH CRS SCORE OF 444 INVITED TO APPLY As of today January 24, 2018 - the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited applicants with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 444 to apply for Canadian permanent residence. The CRS cut-off threshold decreased by 2 points from the previous draw on January 10, 2018. A total of 2,750 invitations were issued in today’s draw which also matched the previous draw.... As with the previous draw, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) employed the tie-break rule, whereby in the event that there are multiple candidates with tied CRS scores, profiles would be ranked according to the date and time of submission of the profiles. Alberta is introducing the Opportunity Stream. On today’s date, the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) streams and categories will be consolidated under a single stream with one set of standardized eligibility criteria. The AINP will become simpler for applicants, more efficient for government and more responsive to Alberta’s emerging labour-market demands. The AINP differs from the federal Temporary Foreign Worker program in that it does not bring foreign workers to Alberta. AINP allows foreign workers already here to apply for permanent residency if they are working in occupations where the employer can demonstrate that no Albertan or Canadian is available.

The Government of Alberta recently announced that beginning January 2, 2018 all its economic class under the Alberta Provincial Nominee categories will be updated. In accordance with the announcement made by the Alberta Provincial Immigration Nominee Program, the only available category for applicants will be Alberta Opportunity Stream which excludes self-employed farmers. Further, in 2018, the AINP will be implementing intake and nomination guidelines that will establish... the maximum number of applications accepted and nominations issued each year by the province, as well as maximum number of applications and nominations by sector and occupation. Additionally, the AINP will implement a list of ineligible occupations. Beginning 2018, in accordance with the new residency status and work permit requirements criteria, an applicant must have valid temporary resident status in Canada that authorizes that individual to work in Canada (i.e. temporary foreign worker) and have a valid work permit (not implied status or restoration status) for an eligible occupation based on either a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or a LMIA exemption for workers covered under international trade agreements, workers transferred within a company, or people taking part in International Experience Canada.
