Alumni Sandwich and Liquor Bar, located in the heart of vibrant 17th Avenue in downtown Calgary, was heavily influenced by diner counters and luncheonettes from a bygone era. In the same manner as its inspiration, Alumni was designed to be an approachable and casual dining destination. It features a long bar with fixed swivel stools for counter service, great for resting your elbows on while propping up a juicy Reuben. Booth style seating divides the room, with a slatted wood... surround to add texture and interest. The materials were all selected as a nod to the retro inspiration: VCT floor tiles, laminate table tops with diner edge detailing, simple wood panels, and gleaming aluminum accents. A colour palette of bright mustard and burgundy are set off against dark browns and cream tones, creating a high contrast palette to create some much needed drama. See more

In approaching the interior design for Donna Mac, the team at SWI aimed to create a space that embodied modest simplicity and turned to Brutalist architecture for inspiration. The term originates from the French word for raw, paralleling the resourcefulness valued by the Donna Mac owner group. The design at Donna Mac focuses on strong, geometric forms with interest through materiality.

Inspired by 1920s Shanghai, a period distinctive for its blending of traditional Chinese architecture and streamlined art deco, now known as "Chinese Deco".
