Why am I not getting better? Why is my patient still struggling? The majority of the time it's because a piece of the puzzle is missing. Is there a missing chronic infection or oxidative stress that is being missed if you are focusing only on hormones?... What about a hormonal issue like low DHEAS or high insulin if you are tired, achy or in pain all of the time? Even though we are trained in silos the human body, and more and more research, is demanding integration to get results! #womenshealth #inflammation #infertility #fertilityjourney #endometriosis #hashimotosdisease #pcos #fatigue #fibromyalgia #fibroids #naturopathicmedicine

International Women's Day feels different this year. It just has a different energy, I have even seen some people saying that because of this fact they don't want to comment. But this is more important than ever.. I have seen more emotional turmoil, burn out, hormonal chaos and mental health concerns. ... Women are now being forced into being Mom's, partners, teachers, leaders, business owners and employees. With all of this they have lost their communities, support systems, self care routines. There is a LOT of grieving that has been happening! There is sacrifice in this and we have so much to appreciate all women for! We will come together in this and rise even stronger. I hope that you take care of yourself self, and all days! Sending so much hope and love

I've been keeping a secret! For a few years now I have been working with Naturopathic Doctors in my courses supporting them to deeply understand physiology, effective protocols and just to nerd out on women's health cases I have been blessed to work with the most amazing people and it is many of them that have encouraged me to take those courses to the next level, sharing research, tricky case troubleshooting, the ins and outs of lab work patterns and so much more. Up until... now I have only shared this course with those people but today it launches to everyone! I am so excited to get to know more practitioners and to work to change lives For more info check the link in my bio! #alwayslearning #researchfirst #womenshealth #naturopathicmedicine #continuingeducation #ebm

Gut bugs, hormones and metabolism. Notice a pattern yet? To my nerdy delight more and more research has been coming out to support and expand on what I have believed for years. That your gut bacteria are in the driver's seat! . Weight loss resistance (yes it is a thing, you don't just need to "try harder") is often contributed to by gut bugs through a process called metabolic endotoxemia. This is where components of the certain bacteria change hormonal function and insulin ...resistance. . Sleep/circadian rhythm changes have also been shown to both change gut bacterial levels, inflammation, hormonal health and much more. . Want to know more? . Are you caught up on the AWH podcast? . The last few episodes we have talked about the importance of mitochondrial health for hormones, inflammation, energy, pain etcetcetc. . I could put about 1000 etcs because the mitochondria literally power every system of your body! ... . Why have I been obsessed with these little guys since day 1? . What do you do when you feel stuck? Stuck in a mood, a rut, a thought pattern? One of my favorite tools is to reach for essential oils. . Certain essential oils have very specific active compounds that can support mental health, digestion, immunity and so much more. I truly think that we are just coming to understand how these amazing compounds work in the body and this is exactly what Dr. Laura Hughes and I discuss in this chat. . In this time of uncertainty and literal social isolation it can feel lonely and down right scary. I have been hearing from my patients that they don't know where to go for information and that they are feeling stressed out and disconnected. . We are being encouraged, and rightly so, to avoid large gatherings, keep our distance from people and practice hygiene the way it was intended to be (lol had to get that in there) wash your hands people! . In this time people aren't sure... who to talk to and are being advised not to seek out medical care unless they are quite ill because of fears of over burdening the hospital systems. . Does that mean that you are alone in your health care? Or that you cannot seek wellness during this time? Absolutely not! . I already have a robust telemedicine practice with patients from all over Ontario and we are both reminding current patients and inviting new patients to come in for immune support consults. To be clear, I am not claiming to help you to prevent or treat COVID-19. We are simply getting you healthy and supporting your general health and immunity during this time. . Email [email protected] or DM me to get booked in! . Be healthy! See more

Tomorrow is international women's day, an incredibly important day in my calendar. International Womens Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It is a day to celebrate but it is also a day to raise awareness for issues that are still uniquely female. I believe that one of those issues sits in the way women engage in and are treated in the current health care system. This is my call to action. . ... 1/3 of deaths in the US are related to medical errors. 1/3! And it is not that I believe that 1/3 of doctors are not good at their jobs, it is that the system is failing patients and doctors and women are uniquely affected by this. . Did you know that women have a 50% higher risk of being given a wrong diagnosis when having a heart attack? Did you know that is takes on average 5 years to have an autoimmune condition diagnosed? That it takes a decade to be diagnosed with endometriosis? Or that it takes approximately 5 years of struggling with debilitating fatigue before it is even properly investigated? . This is time that you could be treated, time that you could be healing, but instead you are suffering. . I take this issue very personally, not only because of my medical challenges but also because I work with these women everyday. Women that are going to their medical doctors, knowing deep within their bodies that something is wrong, and getting dismissed. Women that are finally challenging the system after years, or decades, of being dismissed and getting labelled as a difficult patient. . Women are not complicated! We are intricate. We are intune with our bodies and our needs but we are not hormonal whiners and I fear that this is how many are perceived. Again, this is a failure of the medical system, and the education system. . The current medical paradigm has not been taught to properly investigate the concerns of women. Aside from the reproductive system, the diagnostic criteria for many conditions are the same for men and women. This often leaves women in the dark. Continued in comments! See more

This week is #worldbreastfeedingweek and I have truly never been more passionate about this subject. . Breastfeeding has not come easily to baby Benjamin, we have struggled with latch issues and supply issues in ways that I never expected. When he was four days old he was not gaining enough weight or wetting enough diapers so we needed to start formula. I cried so hard because as a Naturopathic Doctor I just assumed that I had prepared my body and, you know breast is best, so... I just assumed it would work out. I received so many opinions from my midwife, lactation consultant, family, my education. I was incredibly overwhelmed by the differences and I can only imagine how it must feel to my patients now. . I topped up my baby for weeks using a tube at the breast and I truly think that knowing how to do this saved my breastfeeding experience (along with herbs and medications). I still breastfeed my baby, but we also have to top him up with formula. This is not the journey I ever thought I would have but the saying #fedisbest could not be more true. . I have had to work through my fair share of grieving my experience, guilt and shame. I have felt alone and yet when I share my experiences have realized how many women have struggled silently. . As much as world breastfeeding week is meant to celebrate and promote breastfeeding (which it should) I also want to give a shout out to all of the mamas who have done everything they can to breastfeed and could not in the way they imagined. . I will share so much more about what I have learned but for now sending my love to all mamas and fed babies. See more

Time. Is. Flying! I cannot believe that it is only a month until I am done work. As much as I have been really working to stay present in this pregnancy it is still shocking how quickly it has gone! . I will leave all of my sentimental thoughts for another post but I wanted to let current patients know that if you want a follow up before I scurry off to the land of sleepless nights and breastfeeding then book in today!

It's really hard to believe BUT I only have room in my practice for four new patients before I take a break for a few months to have a baby! . If you have been waiting to come see me now is the time! . The fine print, all new patients will have plenty of time for follow ups and lab work interpretation before I push this, hopefully little, man out. ... . Follow up spots are available for the next few months, but keep in mind all current patients, you know how long it takes to get in (sorry! I love you all for your patience!) . Can't wait to see all of you and don't worry, I will be online here and back in office later in the summer. See more

Happy New Year!! . I love, love, love this time of year because the energy is fresh and everything seems possible. It is the time of year I get most inspired, most creative and most ambitious! . That doesn't mean that I set new years resolutions though. When I even think of that word I get hives. There is so much pressure and negatively that can be associated with a resolution.... . That is why I choose to focus on a big yearly theme with monthly habits or goals. This keeps me constantly working and evolving with one focus. . So this year my word is INTENTIONAL. . With a lot of change on my horizon I want to do things with more intention, more presence and more awareness. . I want to spend intentional time with my husband, intentional down time, have intentional time to focus on my business and intentional time to do self care. . It is so easy to fly through the day and not even realize what you have accomplished or even have an intention for what you want to accomplish. It's also easy to not use the time we have to its fullest. Sound familiar? . So what do you want your 2019 to be?! . . . #newyears #freshstart #wordoftheyear #goals #intentional #present See more

Do you have a conflicted feeling about the holidays? . It can be so exciting to have time to catch up with family and reflect on the past years successes but what do you do about the food?! . Whether you are changing your intake due to a health condition or a health goal it is possible to enjoy without the panic.... Top Tips to Enjoy the Season 1) Don't deprive yourself. Do you want a piece of chocolate or cake? So long as your are not gluten, dairy or something free for health reasons then enjoy it. I tell patients I would much rather you eat a small piece of what you really want then not eat it and binge on everything else later! 2) Focus on the joy of the season. As much as it can feel like it, the holidays are not about food! They are about spending time with family, slowing down and taking care of yourself. 3) Bring a dish you want to eat. I always bring the food I want to eat - healthy, delicious and low carb. (Funny enough this normally ends up getting eaten up by everyone else!) 4) Remember that the holidays are a season but the events are only meals. If you have two holiday parties in one week that is not a free pass to eat shit for the rest of the week! You can still stay "on track". 5) Fast, if you feel good doing it. Having a big meal? Make sure you leave 12 to 16hrs between that last bite of food at night and your first bite of food in the morning. That helps to ensure that your metabolic (fat storing) hormones have time to reset. If you snack or graze your way through the holiday season you may be in perpetual fat storage mode! . In any case, enjoy your holidays and stay healthy! . #healthandwellness #healthyholidays #fasting #intermittentfasting #insulin #selflove #selfcare See more

There is a LIFE in LIFESTYLE! . Health is not about perfection, but progress. This time of year can feel especially hard to stay on track with your health goals. Especially for women who need to engage in a lower Carb diet, like women with PCOS. BUT I love when research shows that it is just the small things that can make a difference. . This recent study shows that even just a 1000 step increase per day can lower important inflammatory markers that are associated with insul...in resistance, weight gain, cardiovascular disease, hormonal imbalance and more. . So even with all of the holiday parties (and cold if you live here!) you can get to the gym, get to the mall or just walk around your office more to get the benefits! Not a free pass to live on eggnog and cake lol but it's something! . #womenshealth #weightloss #weightlossresistance #PCOS #CVD #insulinresistance #evidencebasedmedicine #ebm #research #walk See more

Can we love ourselves AND strive for self improvement? . This seems to be the question in a somewhat polarized world. . We have the self love camp, embracing who you are, embracing all it is that makes you you and realizing that every part of you is part of your path.... Then there is the self improvement discussion. One of striving to be better and forever being on the path to betterness. Here is the thing though, I don't think to love yourself doesn't mean that you can't want to get stronger (because you love yourself) or seek mastery in a topic (because you love yourself). The same is true of self improvement, you can strive to be more from a place of love or criticism. You get to choose that. . So today, no matter what path you are on, or if you wander, just take a look at your motivation for action or in action. We don't need more polarity, we need more women loving and living their best lives!! . #selflove #selfimprovement #womenshealth #selfdevelopment #mindset #motivation See more

I love nothing more than seeing the literature match up with my patients symptoms.... This can be a life threatening condition in which a racing heart, weight loss, tremors, anxiety, sleep issues and many other symptoms are common. .
