Please remember that not everyone that advertises themselves as an Osteopath has the necessary qualifications. Osteopathy is not regulated in Canada which means anyone can claim be an Osteopath/Osteopathic Manual Practitioners. In Saskatchewan we have only 3 qualified Osteopathic Manual Practitioners that meet the educational standards. Our members are graduates from a 5 year program and have defended an Osteopathic Thesis. Our members include: ... Barbara Schultze (Regina), Michelle Kormos (Saskatoon) and Curt Cummings (Nipawin). Anyone claiming to be an Osteopath that is not a member of the Saskatchewan Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (SAO) does not meet our educational requirements. When seeking Osteopathic treatment in Saskatchewan please ensure that your Osteopathic therapist is a member of the SAO so that you can be assured that you are receiving SAFE, EFFECTIVE treatment provided by a QUALIFIED practitioner. PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE 306.347.3001 if you have any questions or concerns.

In Saskatchewan, the title Osteopath is no longer protected by the Health Professions Act. This means that anyone can claim to be an osteopath or osteopathic manual practitioner. To ensure public safety and maintain high profession standards, the Saskatchewan Association of Osteopaths/Osteopathic Manual Practitioners (SAO) was formed in 2013. The SAO is also a member of the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths to ensure that national standards and policies are observed. The SAO ...provides education to the public about osteopathy and assures public safety by providing a list of qualified members. Members must demonstrate accountability and adhere to a code of conduct, standard of ethical practice. Their training and qualifications must also meet or exceed the WHO benchmark guidelines, as outlined in the WHO benchmark for osteopathic training (2010). The SAO is a first step in the organization and regulation of osteopathic manual therapists in Saskatchewan. In order to further this profession in Canada, the SAO will be taking all the steps necessary to have osteopathic manual therapy recognized and protected both nationally and provincially.

National Academy of Osteopathy (NAO)/College of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners of Ontario (COMPO) Dr. Shahin Pourgol, Founder/Owner Suspended from the Colle...ge of Chiropractors of Ontario In the November and December 2013 issues of the Newsflash we alerted members to the fact that a Notice of Hearing had been served on Dr. Shahin Pourgol, a registrant with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario concerning allegations of professional misconduct regarding the advertisement of himself and the National Academy of Osteopathy, and, that he had breached section 9 of the Medicine Act, 1991 by using the title osteopath and holding himself out as someone qualified to practice in Ontario as an osteopath. On February 14, 2014, Dr. Shahin Pourgol's certificate of registration with the College of Chiropractors of Ontario was suspended for six months for professional misconduct because of how he advertised himself and the National Academy of Osteopathy and because he breached section 9 of the Medicine Act, 1991 by using the title osteopath and holding himself out as someone qualified to practise in Ontario as an osteopath, when he is not a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. It is expected that further to his suspension that his certificate of registration with the College of Chiropractors will be revoked. We are awaiting the final report of the disciplinary panel and will share this information with our members once the report is available in a future issue of Newsflash. Registrants of a regulatory health college are reminded that your health regulatory college can discipline you if you use the title 'osteopath' which, according to the Medicine Act, 1991, is defined as a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The Medicine Act, 1991 is available in the Members Only section of the website. As you may be aware, 121 Limestone Crescent, Toronto is listed as the (former) primary practice address of Shahin Pourgol, on the College of Chiropractors of Ontario's register. A google search reveals that this address is also the address of the National Academy of Osteopathy, the College of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners of Ontario, the College of Certified Pedorthists of Ontario, the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMSS) and the Canadian Express Collection Agency. We advise all members to disregard information from the National Academy of Osteopathy (NAO) and the College of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners of Ontario (COMPO). The OAO also advises OAO members to steer clear of the Council on Manual Osteopathy Education (CMOE), the International Osteopathic Association (IOA), the Canadian Manual Osteopathy Examining Board (CMOEB), the International Osteopathy Examining Board (IOEB) and the Ontario College of Osteopathic Rehabilitation Sciences (OCORS) which are all organizations controlled by Shahin Pourgol.
