Saturday, November 7, 2020 marks the 135th Anniversary of the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Last Spike was driven at Craigellachie, British Co...lumbia at 0922 local time by CPR Company Director Donald Smith. The construction of the railroad was fraught with intrigue both political and financial but the promise made by Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister, fulfilled an 1871 commitment made by the Canadian federal government to British Columbia that a railway be built joining the Pacific province to Central Canada. The promise of a transcontinental railway had been a major factor in British Columbia's decision to join the Canadian Confederation. MacDonald's vision and determination were catalysts for the project and for the times....we admire his accomplishments without the need to view this project through revisionist eyes.....(Photo RMEO archives) See more
