Hello Aikido Students: All Aikido classes will be canceled immediately, Tuesday March 17th. We will keep you informed of when they will resume. Stay healthy both in mind and body. Continue stretching daily and doing movements that simulate techniques. Those who have the space should practice Boken and jo movements. Take care Don Sensei

This week's Aiki-Theme is Irimi or entering. We practice irimi as a precursor to connecting with our partner. If we cannot enter, we cannot join and we will eve...ntually move with two separate conflicting forces. Irimi is fundamental for musubi (connection) to take place. We often avoid entering due to fear. It's very confrontational to enter another person's personal space. So continuously practicing this movement will help us build courage to overcome the fear of entering. It will also help us enter conflicts in daily life. Did you ever notice one is avoiding, often passive aggressive towards, conflicts but we tend to hardly step into them to solve them. It might feel safe not to enter but in fact this only increases inner conflict as we feel the struggle of not being able to confront our own fears. Irimi is therefore a very useful teaching tool for daily life, for domestic and work-related conflicts, for entering doubts, for addressing the issues which we may tend to avoid in our lives. With the spirit of entering, irimi, we can tackle the issues and find an end to their resolution. Life presents us with battles on a daily basis, battles to stay healthy, battles to get a task or a study completed, battles to live according to social laws, battles to make it to the workplace or to appointments, battles to have your voice count in a debate or dispute. Irimi helps us to enter the battles with a warrior attitude. Irimi must be practiced. It all sounds good on paper but without the physical embodied practice, irimi remains a concept or an idealistic philosophy at best. To get results with irimi as a practical tool, regular practice is necessary. See more
