Here's a cool story about the participants in this photo: https://www.thetelegram.com//retired-rcmp-officers-from-n/
On this day 113 years ago, Canada took yet another step as a young nation. During a short ceremony on January 2, 1908, Governor General Earl Grey set the presse...s in motion to mint the first coin ever produced on Canadian soil, a 50-cent piece bearing the effigy of His Majesty King Edward VII. To close the historic event, Lady Grey minted Canada's first bronze one-cent piece.
I have always admired the craftsmanship that goes into love tokens...
Back in the spring of 2020 the club decided to produce a number of tokens to commemorate our club's 60th anniversary. After a design competition was held the winners were announced (Evan Roy and his brother Nathan) and the order was placed. After a long wait (curse you Covid) the shipment has finally arrived!!!... We produced six different varieties: - Obverse and reverse printed using metallic green ink on a white plastic planchet. - Obverse and reverse printed using black ink on a wooden planchet. - Obverse only (uniface) printed using black ink on a wooden planchet. - Reverse only (uniface) printed using black ink on a wooden planchet. - Each uniface wooden token paired with a special stamp that was created to memorialize the cancellation of this year's Saskatoon Coin and Stamp Show.
Good news for our hobby despite the fact that most coin clubs are either on pause or holding their meetings online...
One lucky birdwatcher in the UK stumbled upon the motherload: https://www.dailymail.co.uk//Birdwatcher-stumbles-800-000-
After more than two years of research, writing and editing, U.S.-based numismatists Bob Hewey and Jim Delaney have published a nearly 400-page catalogue on Canadian and U.S. prison money.
#OTD in 1942, the Alaska Highway was officially dedicated, though it would not be useable by anything but off-road vehicles for a further year. The scene on thi...s note is at mile 996, Otter Falls, Yukon Territory and is the sole image of the North from the 1954 Canadian Landscape bank note series. The area is now a recreation site. 5 dollars, Canada, 1954; photo: artist unknown, 1953 https://www.bankofcanadamuseum.ca//canadian-landscape-ser/ See more
Canada’s second currency. Look up the Canadian Tire Coupon Collectors Club for further study.
In case any of you don't know of it, the Canadian Paper Money Society has a great Facebook page, always full of great information!
Important information regarding the $1, $2, $25, $500 and $1000 bank notes that will no longer be legal tender next year. (And what this REALLY means...)
Happy Halloween everyone!
How I feel every time I publish a new article for our web site:
This is such a great organization to be a member of...
On this date in 1854 PEI's first bank opened in Charlottetown, a branch of Moncton's (The Bend) Westmorland Bank. It would close within two years.

Big congratulations go out to Nathan and Evan Roy from our club for making it into the latest issue of Canadian Coin News!
Alex Colville, designer of the 1967 Centennial coins, was born 100 years ago today.
On today’s date in 1882, the city of Saskatoon, Sask., was founded by the Temperance Colonization Society, a group of Toronto Methodists who formed in 1881 and now wished to establish a capital for their temperance colony.
Do you see the vampire?
Important news:
We have the following important announcements: 1. The 2020 Saskatoon Coin and Stamp Show has officially been cancelled. We will hopefully resume our annual show in October of 2021. This is only the second time since 1962 that we have had to cancel our show. The first time was in 2009 because our venue (the German Concordia Club) burned to the ground a few weeks before the show date, and the organizers could not find an alternate venue in time. We also just heard that our venu...e (the German Cultural Club) is closing permanently. Over the winter we will either find a new venue for next year's show or we will make arrangements with the new owners of the building. 2. We have also decided to cancel all of the Coin Club meetings in September, October, November and December. We would need to use the gymnasium to provide enough social distancing for our members, but the Sask Abilities Council building has been re-organized for the safety of their staff. As a result they have filled their gymnasium with temporary office space so we won't be able to rent it. We hope to resume meeting in January, but we won't know for sure for a few months. We will keep everyone informed. Both of these decisions were made in anticipation that the second major phase of the Covid-19 pandemic will most likely still be raging, and we feel it will not be nearly safe enough to risk the health or lives of our members, dealers and customers. For now we wish you all a safe and happy second half of this nightmarish year, and we look forward to seeing all of you in the new year when we will start celebrating our 60th anniversary as a club! The Saskatoon Coin Club Executive Committee
Today on #NationalPeaceKeepersDay, Canadians honour those who have worked to support international peace missions. Not all of them were soldiers, either. This ...coin, featuring the Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa, was released on October 24, 1995, the 50th anniversary of the United Nations. In case you are wondering, a septillion is a trillion trillion or 1 with 24 zeros after it...
Great video showing how Canadian 1 cent coins were minted in 1920: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ef8FdPJ5aVw&feature=share
You might want to start checking your Canadian Tire money...
Has anyone out there ever seen a 2x2 like this? If so do you know any of its back story? (Asking for a friend... lol)
Happy Canada Day everyone !!!
On today’s date in 1987, the "loonie" entered circulation as 80 million $1 coins were introduced in major cities across Canada. Two years later, the Bank of Can...ada ceased production of the country’s $1 banknote, which was said to be 20 times less durable than coinage. At the time, it was the most significant change to Canada’s coinage system in more than 50 years. See more
I just updated the 1965 1 cent obverse variety graphic and added a new graphic for the 1947 5 cent varieties...
Nice to report some good news regarding theft.
In turn-of-the-century Newfoundland, the British pound was worth $4.80. This explains maybe this note’s oddball denomination. The Newfoundland government likely issued 40 and 80 cent notes to make it easier to convert its money to British pounds. 80 cents, Newfoundland, Canada,1901
#OTD in 1857, Britain endorsed an act allowing Canada to go on the decimal currency system. It just made sense to adopt a system similar to the United States, ...its greatest trading partner. The first coins issued by the Canadian government began circulating in 1858 and were denominated in cents, not pence. 1 cent, Province of Canada, 1858 See more
I just read about this in the latest Canadian Coin News: ICCS finally has a web site!!!! You can register on their site, fill out a digital submission form or download the latest submission form in PDF format. They also have a few variety identification guides and what looks like a monthly blog you can read. Here is the link to their web site:... https://iccscoin.ca/ And you can read the full story at the Canadian Coin News web site by downloading the latest issue...

Here is a decent introduction to collecting Canadian silver dollars aimed at newer collectors:
How many of you out there collect Canadian Tire money? Did you know there is a Facebook group AND a national club dedicated to it?
An insightful reflection on our hobby.
Tiff Macklem, former senior deputy governor of the Bank of Canada, was appointed to the helm of the central bank by Finance Minister Bill Morneau earlier this month.
Thanks to the Edmonton Numismatic Society for this one:

A bit of local news coverage from back in 1989:
Fun fact: The ship on this coin is the HMCS Halifax. SED Systems here in Saskatoon manufactured the external communications systems for all twelve of these Frigates for the Canadian Navy. I was proud to have worked on all twelve systems, and even spent a month in St John NB working at the shipyards to install some upgrades to the HMCS Halifax, HMCS Toronto and HMCS Vancouver...
On today’s date in 1912, Canada issued its first $5 banknote, more than 11 million of which were printed.
Between writing, researching, cataloguing and browsing online offerings to add to their collections, Canadian numismatists have no shortage of tasks to stay busy under lockdown.

ANNOUNCEMENT: After some discussion with our President we don't feel the COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions will have been lifted by early May, so we regret to announce that our May meeting has been cancelled. As that would have been our last meeting before the summer break, our 59th year as a club has come to an early end.... We would like to thank everyone who came to our meetings this year and helped make them so successful. Thanks to you we had record attendance for several of our meetings this year and are very optimistic about the future of our club! We sincerely hope the restrictions will have been lifted by the start of our 60th year as a club in September of 2020, and we will be able to resume our regular schedule of meetings. Sincerely, Your Saskatoon Coin Club Executive Committee
Interesting process...

This spring’s TORONTO COIN EXPO, scheduled for May 1-2 in the Ontario capital, was cancelled today by organizers due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Short but good read if you ever wanted to know more about the reason each monarch faces a certain direction on coinage:
After a discussion with our club President we have decided to cancel our April coin club meeting due to our concerns about the COVID-19 situation. We have too many members who are most at risk of serious complications from exposure so we will err on the side of caution. We will assess the situation in mid-April and determine if we will also cancel our May meeting, but for now we still plan to hold that meeting. Stay safe out there...
Sales at the latest Torex Auction surpassed the $1 million mark according to auctioneers with The Canadian Numismatic Company, which offered 1,677 lots across four sessions in late February.
VERY important announcement for any of you who planned to go to the Edmonton Coin Show:
