Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery 04.12.2020

Every fall at the Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery a new life cycle begins. This year, we have spawned our trout brood stock to collect and fertilize eggs every week since October. As we mentioned in an earlier post, we already have sac fry! Here is a peak at what it looks like when trout fry begin to hatch in our egg baskets. These are our first hatchlings- splake. #FishHatchery #Saskatchewan #Fisheries #Aquaculture #Trout #Splake #SacFry #FishStocking #Fishing #Angling

Some things to consider before heading out on any ice this year. Stay safe out there, folks!

This morning we arrived to work to find our first sac fry of 2020! This little splake is also the first hatchling of our 106th generation of fish produced at the Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery. Yes, we are into our 106th year of operation! We anticipate the rest of our splake to hatch over the next few days. Stay tuned! #FishHatchery #Saskatchewan #Trout #Splake #SacFry #Aquaculture #Fisheries #FishStocking #Fishing #Angling

If you look very carefully, we have a few wiggles in our splake eggs. Always a good sign. #FishHatchery #Saskatchewan #Trout #Splake #Fisheries #Aquaculture #FishStocking #Fishing #Angling

While we missed the contest deadline below (sorry!), we thought we would share this post from our friends and partners at the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation anyway, as the information is still relevant! Fun fact: The Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery's operating costs are covered by the province's Fish and Wildlife Development Fund (FDWF), too! If you purchase a fur, angling or hunting license you are supporting our aquaculture and fish stocking work. We stock up to 150 public water bodies with fish each year, to enhance recreational fishing in Saskatchewan.

This week we had enough brook and brown trout ripe enough to spawn for tiger trout production. In case any of our followers are new to our page, tigers are a hybrid species of trout created by fertilizing the eggs of female brown trout with the milt (sperm) of male brook trout. The result is a striking and feisty fish! #FishHatchery #Saskatchewan #Aquaculture #Trout #TroutSpawning #TigerTrout #Fisheries #FishStocking #Fishing #Angling

Today we are checking our brown and brook trout females for eggs. We have a few that are close to being ready for spawning! We should be able to begin collecting eggs in the next couple of weeks. #FishHatchery #Saskatchewan #Trout #TroutSpawning #BrookTrout #BrownTrout #Fisheries #Aquaculture #FishStocking #Fishing #Angling

Last week lake trout spawn camp wrapped up, and the eggs were delivered to our facility late Thursday night (you can read about the camp in our previous post). Here are a few photos of the staff setting up the eggs upon arrival. :-)
