SPC would like to take this moment to fondly remember and pay tribute to Don Kerr. Saskatoon and Saskatchewan were fortunate to have this fiery treasure in our midst for so many years. Don was a prolific writer who wrote numerous books of poetry along with short stories, plays including a musical. SPC was fortunate to have Don serve on our board for a number of years. Don greatly encouraged and supported other writers and was never one to hold back on his thoughts. As board... member Andy fondly remembers, Don gave me quite a bit of advice and support when I was younger, and one thing I can say with certainty was he was very insistent and exacting in his opinions of what was wheat and what was chaff in my stuff, respectfully of course. Don was as an English professor at the University of Saskatchewan for 44 years. He was also one of the founding members of the Saskatoon Heritage Society back in 1976. Don served for two terms as chair of the Saskatoon Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee, along with stints on the Meeewasin Valley Authority board and numerous other charitable and cultural organizations. He received the provincial Order of Merit in 2007 and became the province's poet laureate in 2011. Don’s love of this city and province was infused in his writing. One of his poems was called, Capitol Punishment, about the demolition of the iconic Capitol Theatre. In the City of Our Fathers is a poem of great love for Saskatoon. His musical Tune Town, with music written by Angie Tysseland, was staged at Persephone Theatre in 2006 was an homage to Saskatoon. Our sincere condolences to the Kerr family. And thank you Don for all of your immense contributions to this province and its writers.
