Boxing Quarantine: Week 1 Hope everyone is finding opportunities to stay active, maybe throw some punches here or there. In the name of keeping this page active, we’ll start with some boxing book reviews. (Uncommonly classy for us, I know. Going forward it’ll probably be YouTube clips and memes).... Here are three recommendations that take you inside the sport. 1) Rope Burns (F.X. Toole) -My all-time favourite boxing book. Written by legendary cutman Jerry Boyd (under a pen name), Rope Burns was adapted by Canadian screenwriter Paul Haggis into the screenplay for Million Dollar Baby. The book is a series of (fictional) boxing short stories, but they are told from the perspective of the ultimate insidersomeone who was a boxer, cutman, trainer and manager. 2) Facing Ali (Stephen Brunt) -Toronto sportswriter Stephen Brunt traveled the world to interview fifteen boxers who fought Muhammad Ali, to find out how sharing the ring with the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) changed and shaped their lives. 3) The Last Great Fight (Joe Layden) -The story of Mike Tyson’s first professional loss in Tokyo, Japanby knockoutto James Buster Douglas, a 49 to 1 underdog. Perhaps the greatest upset in the history of boxing, but utterly predictable when you look at all the facts and issues surrounding the fight. Honourable Mentions: -Atlas: From the Streets to the Ring (Teddy Atlas) -The Ultimate Book of Boxing Lists (Bert Sugar & Teddy Atlas) -Cinderella Man (Jeremy Schapp) Any titles to add? Put them in the comments below.
