Some things in life will never make sense. We are deeply saddened by the loss of a friend, a teammate and a brother in our football community. The Wheten family is a huge part of everything we do here with Sault Ste. Marie football. For several years, Matt was a player in SMFL, with the Sault Sabercats and St. Mary’s Knights. The Sault Football community is a tight knit group, and now more than ever we will lean on each other for support. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike, Isabelle, Jeremy, Cody and Aaron. Matthew, may you Rest In Peace.

SMFL would like to congratulate both Ethan Fawcett and Dylan Monico on their commitments to play for the Waterloo Warriors and Bishops Gaiters. Two more elite SAFA athletes headed to the next level. Goodluck and represent the Sault well boys! #705 #CIS

Congratulations goes out to our 2020 Norm Casola award winners Ethan Carchidi and Jarett Dewar. This prestigious SMFL award is given out annually to 2 graduating players from our bantam division based on all of their years played in the league. Even without a season, these two young gentlemen demonstrated the characteristics through their respective tenures with the league. Throughout Jaretts years in the SMFL, he consistently demonstrated commitment, work ethic, and tenacit...y on the field while allowing his skills to take over games as a flashy running back. Off the field, he was a leader and a great ambassador for our league. Congratulations Jarret. During Ethans time in SMFL he was known by every one of his coaches as a player who would do whatever he was asked to do for his team. A hard hitting linebacker, Ethan always found ways to make big plays in big situations. A quiet leader, he led by example on and off the field. Grit, effort and determination we’re on display at every practice and in every game. Congratulations Ethan.

Despite a cancelled 2020 season, the SMFL executive will still be presenting our prestigious Norm Casola award. The Norm Casola award is given annually to 2 graduating players (2006) from the bantam division. The award represents hard work, ability and dedication to their teams during their tenure in the league. Stay tuned, winners to be announced soon!

Good afternoon football families, It is with great sadness that after holding out for as long as we possibly could, the SMFL is officially cancelling our 2020 season. We are all hanging our heads today but know that we will be back next summer, better than ever. For anyone who has already paid their registration fee, refunds have been issued and are taken some time to be completed. If you do not receive a refund please give it some time and then reach out to us. ... We are still hoping that we will be able to host a few skills camps or scrimmage nights in august if the government and public health unit restrictions allow us to do so. More information will be posted at a later date. Please continue to stay positive folks, we look forward to seeing all of you back on the field next year!
