Save A Family Plan 12.02.2021

This year, India has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lock-downs, self-isolating, and social distancing, accompanied by limited resources means daunting challenges for the communities we serve. Our priority now is to ensure families and communities can access basic needs, have the means to return to work, and that children are able to continue their education. During these difficult times, if you would like to help us support those most in need, please consider donating online through our website (link in bio).

World Toilet Day celebrates toilets and raises awareness about the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. Improved sanitation facilities help prevent water-borne diseases, malaria, dengue fever, and other deadly and chronic diseases. Last year, Save A Family Plan supported 281 families to build new toilets, reducing open defecation, preventing diseases, and providing a dignified life for many people, especially women and children. #WorldToiletDay

Happy World Toilet Day! Racharla, his wife, and his three daughters live in a single room house with no toilet. When his daughters were young, the family relied on open defecation in surrounding fields for their sanitary needs. When his daughters got older, Racharla built a temporary toilet with sheets to provide them with more safety and privacy. Despite this improvement, the family was still prone to many skin and water-borne diseases, malaria, and dengue fever. Recently, Save A Family Plan supported Racharla’s family to build a new toilet and provided awareness training on improved hygiene practices, both of which have greatly increased their health, safety, and wellbeing.

When her husband died, Sobana was faced with all household and family responsibilities, including caring for her children. Recognizing her enthusiasm and potential, SAFP provided Sobana with management and entrepreneurship training and the financial support necessary to start a business through our Family Development Program. After six years in the program, Sobana has gone from making very little money to now owning the restaurant where she used to work as a day labourer. ...She makes at least $500 per month for her family and provides jobs to many other women in her community. SAFP’s Family Development Program provides over 8,000 partner families with the kind of opportunities and support that Sobana needed to overcome poverty. #EradicationOfPoverty See more

Over the last five years, Shanty has gone from little earnings as a daily wage labourer in a local bakery to successfully cultivating a wide range of crops and rearing various livestock through her participation in SAFP’s Family Development Program. In her rural village in Kerala state, Shanty and her family cultivate plantain, tapioca, yams, galanga, and bananas through organic farming as well as rearing goats, rabbit, and chickens. These activities lead to increased income year after year to help Shanty’s family meet their daily needs. #RuralWomen #IDRW2020

Today we acknowledge the crucial role that women and girls play in ensuring sustainability of rural households and communities and improving rural livelihoods. The majority of participants in SAFP’s Family Development Program are women-headed households looking to learn the skills necessary to start their own small business. Examples of small businesses for women in rural areas include cultivation of various crops, livestock rearing, tailoring, and petty shops. #RuralWomen #IDRW2020

Mr. Pendor was an unemployed young man living in a local village with his wife and daughter. Through Save A Family Plan Community Development Program, unemployed youth were identified by their village action team and were granted access to various programs such as vocational training. Mr. Pendor was selected to participate in the vocational training, as he had not been able to find a job in spite of all his efforts. He was given a grant to attend training on bicycle repair. ... After completing the training, he accessed a micro loan which allowed him to purchase spare bicycle parts and open a shop in the village. He has been running a very busy business. He and his family are very happy about his success.
