The Capital Regional Board has voted not to cancel the collection of glass in curbside blue boxes. After lengthy and sometimes heated debate the Board has rejec...ted the advice of its own Environment Committee, which had concluded that recycling of glass is nowhere near as effective as people assume it is. Ben Isitt was among the majority who didn't buy the argument. "I understand why the industry is lobbying for this, it's clearly within their economic interest," says Isitt. "I can't for the life of me understand why this hair-brained proposal has gotten this far at this table. It's counter-intuitive and it defies common sense reasoning." The region is going to have to undertake a public education program to inform residents that glass does have to be separated from other recyclables.
