Save Beacon Hill Park 21.01.2021

Another day, another tent fire and another assault in Beacon Hill Park. 24/7 sheltering in the park needs to end - the sooner, the better.

Remember bylaw infractions can be reported to the city to be addressed in the interim. The areas that are permitted for 24/7 sheltering are specific - shelters outside those areas should be reported as should other infractions (overly large tents, inappropriately spaced tents, etc.). Also - hold the city accountable to their March 31 promise (the sooner Beacon Hill and other parks are decamped the better).

A week ago there was a fire in a homeless encampment in Saanich. Tonight, Beacon Hill Park is ablaze. Despite 29,000 signatures calling to end 24/7 camping in Beacon Hill Park, despite the city being sued over violation of the Trust, they failed to act soon enough, and tonight, it's in flames because of the city's negligence.

One of the reasons 24/7 sheltering in parks isn't appropriate is the risk of fire it poses. We hope Beacon Hill Park does not experience a similar tragedy and that the practice is ended before harm to the park or those using it to shelter happens.
