https://www.cbc.ca//moncton-council-heritage-house-ashford What happens when heritage protection is a reactive response instead of a proactive strategy? Messy situations that lead to big issues down the road, and in the end, loss of heritage. This historic house in Moncton NB is now in the middle of a dispute between Council and a developer who is looking to replace it with a parking lot. Council rushed to have the house listed on the non-demolition list at the last moment..., creating a situation in which the development of a six storey condo next door would have to be adjusted while construction work is underway. The developer is fighting the decision in order to continue his initial plans (https://globalnews.ca/.../heritage-designation-historic.../). The James Willison Grout Nelles house at 133 Main Street East, currently owned by DeSantis Homes, shares a similar story which started almost ten years ago (https://savemainstreet.ca/news/how-did-we-get-here.html). After delaying inclusion on the non-demolition list, Council scrambled to save it only when a demolition permit has been already issued. A heritage conservation agreement was reached with the former developer in order withdraw the demolition request and restore the historic building. However, the agreement was never registered and therefore the conditions attached to it could not be enforced. The house was eventually designated, but those mistakes created the grounds for the issues with the five storey mixed-use proposal that we're facing today.
