Special thanks to Crispy Co, Ottawa, ON (pictured below); Anna Plakina, Aylmer, QC; and Kevin Watson (India) for fasting today in solidarity with Celina Urbanowicz. Despite living here for 23 years, she is fighting deportation to persecution and violence in the brutal political climate of Poland. Amnesty International says she faces multiple risks on account of their intersectional vulnerabilities stemming from their identity as a Roma woman, wife of a Muslim man, and as the mother of a lesbian woman. The chain fast (see how to join below) runs until Sept. 16, to represent each year Celina has lived in Canada without status. One of the most beloved people right now at various Ottawa hospitals, long-term care residences and daycares is Mama Celina Urbanowicz, who since the start of the pandemic has sewn together thousands of free masks for places that are always short on PPE. She is saving lives. Yet after living here or 23 years, she is, as a Roma refugee, also fighting deportation to Poland. There are many dangers and hardships that await Celina but she as she always is, puts others before herself. Mama Celina has represented many of us who do not have status but have demonstrated the Canadian way which is showing real compassion to communities, giving to others and standing together in unity through difficult times. Please continue to show compassion and support even after tragedies arrive, we all have the power to save lives if we all stand united!

August 2, 2020 is the Romani and Sinti Genocide Remembrance Day. In 2018, Canada recognized and acknowledged the genocide that happened 75 years ago. We are happy that positive steps have been made to finally include us as part of history. The panel will be talking about the Roma people across the world face historical and ongoing persecution, including removal, imprisonment and surveillance, stigma, lack of access to health and education, gendered violence, etc. Romani Genocide Day commemorates the many Roma people killed in the Holocaust.

First and foremost I would like to thank Ottawa Ctv News , Ottawa CBC News , Iheartradio CFRA 985 The Jewel & Chri Radio 99.1 for sharing my mother’s story. She Is not a Canadian citizen even though she has lived in Canada for 23 years. When this virus spread to Canada and hit our communities my mother immediately took action to help vulnerable people and our Frontline heroes to reduce the spread of the virus so our fellow citizens are not in harms way separating families a...nd destroying them. Despite her own hardship she is currently experiencing, She’s such a caring and kind person, she puts others before herself. I have not seen my mother smile in such a long time , this focus on helping others has given us a warm feeling in our hearts. The positive side of this pandemic is that we have come together as a community and a nation sharing the struggles we face and dividing them amongst each other finding helpful resolutions. We will rise and become stronger than ever as a compassionate nation helping when it is needed. Take care and stay strong. See more
