Club members, try this. It should keep you busy until Christmas and it will actually let you know exactly how the signs are supposed to be executed if you do not wish to lose points.

If youve never had an anxious or fearful dog, todays writing does not apply to you. This is about my belief that clear and fair corrections make dogs more con...fident, a continuation from yesterday. Pet dog training and training dog for an instinct sport have found a big split in training. I believe pet dog owners need to see us working dog people train our dogs. They need to see how clear we are, how black and white we are, and that we dont allow our dogs to flounder. Wed give a simple command and ensure they do it, like sit. As I watch sheep-dog trainers, I dont see anxious or reactive dogs. I go to an agility trial and see many of these same bloodlines as fearful messes, with their kind people rewarding all that they do right. The dogs believe the sky is about to fall on their heads, and rather than a lifeline or understanding, they get a cookie popped into their mouths. Food is not the right answer for feeling unsafe. Rupert knows about becoming brave with corrections. He was not a confident dog; its what made him so delightful. Hes cautious around new people. After his award winning rabbit chasing moment, he got conditioned with an Ecollar. Rupert now can be off leash anywhere, with or without his collar. It was about a week after his Ecollar first got strapped on that a friend of mine came over. Hes a giant compared to me. Not only does he have substantial size, but also presence. As we were chatting about something, he commented to Rupert, Arent you an asshole. It was shockingly harsh for perfect Rupert, but I didnt quite understand why his comment felt so off. It wasnt until the next day that I realized Rupert jumped on him. Scared little Rupert molested him in fact. He had barely sniffed a stranger before, but on this day he leapt on this guy. How odd. And excellent! I love it when a shy dog finds their moxy. Time continued, and shortly thereafter he got his Rudepert name. The shy little mouse has gone to sleep, being replaced by Rudepert. Today he went up and nicely greeted two other strangers. Hes gotten quite friendly with the world, so much so that I forget that he avoided people for so long. This all changed when he learned he must listen, even when he didnt want to. Yesterday I was at the vets. Everyone must now wait outside, and a gregarious German shepherd scared a puppy. This puppy had been quite confident until this moment. The woman transformed from a confident handler to an annoying whiny cheerleader. As she did this, her dog fell apart and was at the end of its leash trying to bolt away. She made the issue way worse. She showed no clarity or strength. When we only have rewards to help us, we get all weak and weird trying to help our dogs through these situations. If Id of had the puppy at the vets Id of handled things differently. First GSD wouldnt have gotten anywhere near my puppy. However, if she had, I would have bent down and gotten my puppy to stand still. Id of helped them get it right, feeding as I coached, but also insisting as strongly as needed. If that did not work and they panicked, I would have instantly stopped the panic. Thats no fun for a dog. I would have scolded them for pulling on a leash. Thats a clear line in the sand, something concrete that they can change. Its a breath of fresh air. Puppy would have learned that he didnt have to worry about anything except making me unhappy if he pulled on the leash. I am the only thing you need to worry about. Its that simple. I consider it a gift I can give to a dog, that I can snap them out of a panic by scolding them for something else. Fears spread fast in a dogs mind. Rather than allow hundreds of possibilities, I create one. The only thing they need to worry about is how unpleasant I am if Im unhappy. The way to make me unhappy is pulling on your leash. What a relief it must be for dogs knowing that Im clear, stable and fair, and only one thing makes me unhappy. The only way they can do that is by yanking the leash. Thats the only worry they need to have and its fully under their control. Rupert got the same with rabbits. When he learned he had to come back, all of his recalls improved. He was faster and happier, joyous in fact , wether his collar was on or not. He loved not having a choice. I dont have many rules. I have shockingly few. Dont pull on a leash. Dont bite me for toe nails. Come when you are called. And for all except Rupert, Down. Thats it. These are my only enforced rules. Rupert and Pippa both were destined to be anxious messes. Neither are. By having these black and white rules, I have happy, confident dogs who know their place in the world. Except Pippa. She thinks she runs a dog school, and she might be right. So many factors went into this decision. All based on a desire to keep everyone in the Barnhunt family, the club, and the extended community safe to hunt another day.

Hey, gang. Remember last year we were talking about doing some Nadac agility where we could send videos of our our qualifying runs to the USA to gain titles? Well, Ev And Bob Sera have an arrangement that might work for our group! Hi Judi, Hope you are well during these crazy times. You had mentioned to me that you have people interested in NADAC agility. One feature of NADAC is that they provide a course and you set it up and video tape your dog's first run doing it. ... You can submit it and if they feel it is worthy of a qualifying score you receive credit for it. This spring and summer I plan on offering that as an opportunity for people to keep training in agility but have an option to do a form of trialing. Are you interested? My plan is to offer that but people have to pregister and I will ensure that we have no more than 5 people here at one time providing lots of social distance. All touching and moving of equipment will be done by me or Bob. It costs $10.00 (U.S.) to submit your video and I would charge $20.00 per run (cover my costs to set up and take down equipment and use of my field). People would be responsible for providing someone and the equipment to do the video and send it in. Any practice runs afterward would be at $10.00/run. Your comments and opinions are welcome. A time to be creative about how we do things. Think about this and let me know if you are interested in pursuing this farther.
