Huge shout out to @philnorris58 & not just because it is his birthday today! From the moment Phil joined the SCCR community we heard multiple people say he is the volunteer MVP. Anytime someone needed a mucking shift covered Phil would step up to the plate even if he was working night shifts and he was exhausted! That escalated to helping out Kris any chance he got, from fixing fence posts to fixing shelters which fell down because the crazy winter we got. Something needs to get done Phil is there to do it! Did you know Phil even changed his work schedule so he can be at the ranch any chance he gets. We are so thankful for Phil joining the SCCR family. He has impacted & helped the ranch in such a short time he has been here. So thank you for everything you do Phil & happy birthday!!

It was bitter sweet day yesterday seeing this mare head to her forever home! Pickles came to us as a 7month old in early 2017. She had made so many volunteers fall in love with her gentle but shy nature. We appreciate all the hard work our volunteers have put in working with Pickles throughout the years. Her buddy Luke & the rest of us at SCCR with miss her dearly but wish her the best with her new amazing family

Progress always starts where your comfort zone ends when working with an ungentled horse this quote is the tenet of training. It is at the core of pressure and release training and is the truth for both humans & horse. Often it is that first touch that is the biggest boundary. Marie Kuzilova-Chau

Success Story Sunday My story with Avalon started when I was helping my boyfriend Donny get Avalon ready for a pony show to be adopted. Avalon is Donny’s horses sister. It was the week before people were coming to see Avalon. Donny & I both looked at her & said we can’t let her go. First of all Caden her brother would be heart broken & in 2 weeks this horse gave us everything we asked her to do! So I adopted her.... Our progress might have been slow because I had to be cautious with my brain injury but that just grew our bond. She was an emotional support during one of the hardest times in my life. Little progress made me feel successful when during my concussion recovery I was constantly reminded of what I can’t do anymore. Then I was helping with a March Break camp at the ranch & one of the horses we were going to use had a rash on her stomach so I said don’t worry we’ll try Avalon! She was a rock star! She was so patient with kids. A boy who was non verbal came to the camp & I think everyone assumed he couldn’t ride. From my experience as a education assistant I could read this boy’s boy language & he wanted to ride but no one gave him the chance. So I asked him at the end if he wanted a turn & he lite up. Avalon went super slow because she could tell he wasn’t confident but the boy did it with a huge smile on his face! I cried how proud I was of Avalon! It was the day that I knew Avalon was meant for me & we would impact so many kids lives. Since adopting Avalon I have started my own business at Cheekye Ranch called Giddy Up Equine Experiences where we do equine experiences, camps & afterschool programs with kids. We have lots of kids that Avalon helps with their anxiety, confidence & many more life skills. Avalon gave me a way out of a job I loved but wasn’t helping myself heal, she gave me an opportunity to combined my education as a development service worker, my love to help & work with kids with my passion for horses. I am now the luckiest girl in the world to work with horses & kids in nature every day Thanks to Avalon & Kris @ SCCR! ...because of you I laugh a little harder, I cry a little less & I smile a little more.

Huge Shout out to our rockstar volunteer coordinator @erikamstark ! As SCCR's volunteer coordinator, Erika wrangles our 75+ volunteers who work tirelessly to keep the ranch running smoothly. How she has time for her job & for two horse plus the other horses she cares for at the ranch is beyond me because being SCCR volunteer coordinator is a huge job. From going through applications to orientations to scheduling shifts to random questions to missing or broken forks/mucking equipment, I think the list could go on forever. This amazing lady does it all with a smile on her face! Multitasking & organization is Erika’s super power and we are so glad to have her on our team! Thank you Erika for all the hours you put in making sure our paddocks, rescues & volunteers are looked after

As we say goodbye to 2020 and open our arms to a new year...all of us at Second Chance Cheekye Ranch would like to say "Thank you!" for all your support in a troubled year and hope your support continues as we embark on another year, saving as many equines as we can and placing them with the best ever homes. These innocent animals are depending on your love and support. And your lifesaving gift today can make all the difference. Meet sweet baby Tommy... he’s only 9 months old but he’s already been through so much. Tommy is one of the 6 colts and fillies that arrived from Alberta, saved right from the meat buyers facility. He was a weak little guy when he arrived but has since been de-wormed and vaccinated and is getting stronger every day! These cuties will stay with us here until we are sure they’re in good enough health to find homes. If you would like to donate to Tommy’s care please visit our Can...adaHelps page, link in bio. #rescuehorse #colt #younghorse #horserescue #friendsnotfood #endhorseslaughter #endanimalcruelty #adoptdontshop #notohorsemeat #horserehab #horsehealth #rescuerehabilitaterehome
