These are difficult days. We need to do whatever we can to take care of ourselves- and that will help us better take care of others. We thought we would share this great pandemic self-care list in case you find it helps. Take care! Pandemic well-being... - Shower - Medication - Drink water - Clean one thing/space - Tend to something growing/living Be mindfully present to: - A sound or song - A sensory feeling - Something you see - A spiritual practice Finally: - Reach out to a human outside your home - Do one thing to get your heart rate up - Do one thing you’ll be glad you did later - Do one thing just because you want to - Get in at least one good laugh
Thanks to SCE LifeWorks staff who contributed food, goods and $ donations to North Point Douglas Women's Center! Thanks to Erin and Brenda for loading up and driving it all over. You can donate to NPDWC as well! https://www.canadahelps.org//north-point-douglas-womens-c/

Jennifer Tingley has been a valued member of the SCE LifeWorks’ Supported Employment Services team for four and a half years. Jennifer is retiring from her position as Employment Consultant with SCE LifeWorks, and her last day at work was this last Thursday. Jennifer has worked closely with everyone she supported to provide guidance and encouragement, and has made a lasting impression on everyone she worked with along the way. With her support, many participants of SCE LifeWorks have successfully obtained and maintained employment. Jennifer also mentored practicum students and other members of the team throughout her years with us. She has worked with great dedication; increasing opportunity, diversity and inclusion in the Winnipeg workforce. Thank you for your service, Jennifer! Have a very happy retirement.
Skylar and Randolph are graduates of Project SEARCH at the HSC_Winnipeg site. Project SEARCH and HSC Winnipeg gave Skylar and Randolph a chance to learn valuable skills, and Project SEARCH also gave HSC Winnipeg a chance to see what kind of great workers these young men were, and where they could be good fits into the hospital to help meet their needs. Both are now employed at HSC Winnipeg (and have been doing important work right though the pandemic). Great work Randolph, Skylar, and HSC Winnipeg! This video is a part our our/ Manitoba Supported Employment Network’s pandemic version of Take Your MLA To Work Day #MLA2WorkDay! We’re happy to loop Malaya Marcelino, MLA for Notre Dame in to share these terrific employment inclusion success stories happening in her constituency! Happy Disability Employment Awareness Month! #DEAM2020
No one has served with SCE LifeWorks longer than Gerard McDonough. With over three decades of dedicated service to a number of men supported by SCE LifeWorks, Gerard has had a huge impact on the lives of the people he has supported, as well as their families. Well, red alert, Gerard is retiring today! A few of us gathered at the home of the man he supports to greet Gerard as he wrapped up his last shift. There were cheers, and there were definitely tears. Ann Kupfer and Roby...Continue reading
We are kicking SCETV back into fuller gear again this week! For people we support: contact the primary person you work with at SCE LifeWorks to get a schedule with the Go To Meeting (videoconference) links. Check out all of our offerings. We have a new and fun one in the mix this week: LifeWorks Idols! What to sing or play a song or share a poem? Tune in and share your gift! That session is 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
We're so pleased to partner with StandardAero as they work to diversify their workforce. Thank you for celebrating Disability Employment Awareness Month #DEAM with us! You've hired one of our Project SEARCH grads, embraced him as a part of your team, and helped him find a valued role!
We have one more 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Excellence recipient to honour! Anna Wesolowska-Kulbinska started working with SCE LifeWorks almost ten years ago as an Individualized Support Worker, but her commitment to her work and to the people she served quickly led to her being hired as a Co-ordinator in Individualized Support Services in 2011. Anna is fully committed to the well-being of the people she supports on her caseload, many of whom have complex support needs. Bec...ause she has demonstrated this consistently throughout her career, the people she supports, families and support networks trust and appreciate Anna because they know by both her words and actions she is fully committed to the well being of the people she supports. Her team members appreciate Anna's effective advocacy, professionalism, persistence and her organizational skills. Anna is always willing to help out a team member in need as well. During COVID 19, Anna's role has become that much more difficult. Still, Anna has been the busiest contributor to SCETV, planning and hosting virtual, interactive sitting exercise sessions three times per week! Anna has been lauded for her engaging and enthusiastic approach. Amazing work, Anna! Thank you, and congratulations! See more
We wrap up Direct Support Professional Recognition week with a feature on another 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Excellence recipient: Samantha Way! Samantha is an Employment Consultant (just recently on leave to grow her family - wishing you all the best!) with direct support professional roots in other roles in the organization, previously as an Individualized Support Worker and Job Coach. The common theme in Samantha’s career: she steps up. Calm, caring, and organized, she ...isn’t afraid to speak up to advocate for people she serves, always in a respectful and effective manner. Samantha is looked up to by other team members because she is always willing to help, and has taken on other caseloads to cover for others when need be. The Employment Consultant role is multifaceted, with building relationships with people we support, exploration of interests and abilities, job development, resume development, interview preparation, on-the-job training and follow up support. Samantha has thrived in this exciting and dynamic role. During the pandemic, as we developed SCETV, Samantha took on the facilitation of a weekly vision board session to interact virtually with jobseekers we support. Great work, Samantha, and thank you! Thinking of you in the coming days! See more
Congratulations Project SEARCH students at both the HSC_Winnipeg site, as well as the Manitoba Hydro/ Manitoba Government site! You've completed your first (part) week! You've learned where exactly to go to get to your classroom, some of you have learned the bus route, and you've finally learned who you'll be sharing the year with. Good luck with your year...and with your first work/internship rotations!
We hope that it is coming across that we at SCE LifeWorks think that all of our direct support professionals are special. We are, however, featuring a very special direct support professional today. That is because Alan Morgan, Individualized Support Worker, is CELEBRATING HIS 25TH ANNIVERSARY with SCE LifeWorks today!!! For 25 years, Alan has been the epitome of a rock solid direct support professional. As such, Alan is also a recipient of our 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Ex...cellence. He has been supporting the same person over the course of the last few decades, and is still proactive in finding ways to ensure that the man he supports is fulfilled in his work and activities, exercising, eating well, and advocating in other areas of his life if need be. Alan (and his opinion) is highly respected by both the home staff and family of the man he supports. The success at work and in the community experienced by the man we support has had one constant for decades: Alan’s kind, caring, calm and good natured support. Oly here: as Alan’s Coordinator a few decades ago, nothing has changed - Alan has been a consummate pro from the beginning. The fact that Alan has dedicated his working life to the wellbeing of the man he supports makes my heart soar. Amazing. To Alan: a very special Happy Direct Support Professional Recognition Week to you!! THANK YOU for your service!!
We are thankful for all of our direct support professionals who have been providing terrific support on a day-to-day basis throughout the COVID - 19 pandemic. Today, as we continue our celebration of Direct Support Professionals Appreciation Week, we feature another employee who has been proving excellent service throughout the year. Grace Ogunniyi is another worthy recipient of a 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Excellence! Grace was lauded for her consistent, kind, engaging and... creative support, before and during COVID lockdown. Even while the people she supported were stuck at home, Grace used her creativity and initiative to make the best of the situation, teaching new skills, developing new activities and working to build independence for those she served - "above and beyond" in the words of the parents of a man she supports. Congratulations, and thank you Grace! See more
We continue with our celebration of Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, featuring another 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Excellence Recipient, Tyler Waldbauer! Tyler joined our team as an Employment Consultant two years ago. He is a team player, always willing to help his co-workers. Tyler has a really positive approach with the people he serves, building strong working relationships. Recently, Tyler took on the role of hosting Emotional Intelligence sessions on SCETV, preparing diligently to ensure that his sessions were smooth and engaging to the online participants he hosted. Thank you for your great service, Tyler, and congratulations!
Happy Direct Support Professional Recognition Week! We are so grateful to the 75+ Direct Support Professionals working for SCE LifeWorks and providing support (most on a day to day basis) to the people we serve...in good times as well as in challenging COVID19 times! Congratulations to ADSPM for working with the Province of Manitoba to have the week formally celebrated with a proclamation. Today, we would like to highlight one of our terrific Individualized Support Workers, S...usana Salazar! She is one of the recipients of the 2020 SCE LifeWorks Award for Excellence. Susana has provided consistent and excellent support for over five years now, but her everyday consistency and positive encouragement to the people she served during COVID19 did not go unnoticed! During what would have been a difficult time with many hours stuck at home, Susana helped build up a new routine with a menu of activities including baking, exercising, journaling, preparing lunches, and crafting, "all with meaningful educational dialogue" (quote from the parents of the young man she supports) and with an eye toward building independence. Amazing work, Susana - congratulations and thank you! Watch for more Direct Support Professional shoutouts throughout the week!
On this Labour Day, we think of people with developmental disabilities who want to work, who are capable and competent workers, who are looking for the chance to fulfill their employment potential, and are awaiting the opportunity from the business that will believe in them.
Our Project SEARCH Teachers and Skills Trainers at both HSC_Winnipeg site and Manitoba Hydro / Manitoba Government site have been busy for a while now, preparing for another exciting year during this extraordinary COVID19 period. For Project SEARCH Winnipeg during COVID-19, we are: - providing students with five re-usable masks - ensuring 2 metre physical distancing can occur during classroom time... - providing touchless temperature checks before classroom time We pass on a big thank you to our Teachers and Skills Trainers for their hard work and creative ideas to allow for the continuation of Project SEARCH during this uniquely challenging year! Go Teams! Celebrating the launch of the tenth year of Project SEARCH in Winnipeg (and in Canada)!
