Making a custom panel for a storm door. We didn’t have the right shaper cutter for the job, so out came the old Stanley 78. Its actually a lot faster at times to use hand tools for one off pieces as the set up time alone often negates any perceived saved time a power tool offers. Plus its a lot of fun to do and much more relaxing. This is one more component for our contract at a heritage house in Arnprior. The storm door and surrounding trim is almost done and we will be mov...ing on to the small roof over the former servant's entrance. Just finished the trim work on this built in seating for a dining room. Inside and outside angled curves made it a good challenge and the lidded seats offer tons of storage. One of the things I really enjoy about the shop is that it brings all manner of interesting projects. This is a great example, a solid mahogany sailboat rudder. The old one had rotted under the layers of fiberglass and eventually snapped where the top pintle waw bolted through. Using the old rudder as a template I made a new one. Hopefully it will last longer that the original. So I stumbled across two milk crates full of these carpenter's pincers up in the attic of my father's garage. He told me to take them as he didn't want to look at them anymore. They are new old stock, made in post WWII Italy, rock solid and the best tool out there to pull nails from trim and other workpieces. They are up for sale, $8 each or 3 for $20. Our client was given a really neat antique table with some beautifully turned legs. The only problem is that the table is 2-1/2" too short. We turned a half dozen leg extenders to fit the ends of the legs.
