Livestream Interview with Jochen Schleese: Evaluation Saddle Fit for the Rider
#NoStirrupNovember has begun! Donegal is a big and powerful moving horse, so Jaimey takes his stirrups away from time to time to make sure that he is using... his seat and not his arms. Taking the stirrups away allows you to find the deepest part of the saddle, lengthen your leg and use your core, and not rely on the stirrup and reins. It also helps you develop better balance on the horse. This is common practice in our training program with many of our students. , . See more
Looking great Alice!
Who needs it? When it comes to saddle fit, or more specifically, saddle fit education, there are a lot of people in the horse community who think they don't nee...d it. "Why would I need to learn about saddle fit when I can just call a fitter?" Good question, however it fails to understand that saddle fitters don't receive the same education globally, unlike when a nurse is learning how to intubate or draw blood, where the process is the same wherever you go. Saddle fitters also are NOT regulated, they aren't required to carry malpractice insurance, nor are some of them even required to re-certify. If something happens with your vet, you know you can file a formal complaint and have some form of recourse, but with a fitter 99% of the time you have nothing. Just a horse who has been injured by saddle fit, sometimes to the point of being unrideable. That brings us back to our main question - Who needs saddle fit education? The answer is everyone. That's not to say everyone should be a certified saddle fitter or saddle ergonomist, but everyone who does anything with horses should at least know the basic concepts (outside of what brand reps tell you). You, as a horse person, should understand both how a saddle should fit and, more importantly, why. This protects you and your horse from those who do not seek to do harm, but do so through lack of proper knowledge or training. Meaning well unfortunately does not protect either horse or rider from harm. Not meaning to hit someone with your car doesn't magically prevent the pedestrian from not sustaining injuries. Also, you cannot know if your horse is in pain without first understanding how to identify the subtle signs of discomfort and pain in the horse.
Thank you Denise Lenz Saddlefit Technician and Schleese Saddlery for your great service and fantastic saddles that the KP Dressage horses use. Properly fitted ...Saddles are an important part of a riders equipment and should be checked regularly. One of our mares, Remember Me and mom Carol Montocchio Couldn’t believe that this mare has put on an additional 3 inches in only several months as Remi moves into the FEI level. Her saddle was adjusted again to help keep her comfortable and performing at her best. See more

What's wrong with too long? A huge majority of saddles today are far too long for the horse. So what, you may ask. Is it really that bad to have a saddle sitting beyond the last vertebrae? YES! Pressure in the lumbar region severely destabilizes the spine, prevents your horse from engaging, and puts them at risk for riding related injuries.... Unlike the thoracic vertebrae which has the supporting structure of the ribs, the lumbar does not, and any pressure will have the horse drop away and become hollow. A hollow horse cannot engage, cannot step beneath himself, or carry weight, instead, he propels himself forward with his hind onto his forehand and predisposes him to kissing spine. Schleese saddles are designed and fitted to protect the horse from avoidable injuries and discomfort by accommodating increasingly short Saddle Support Areas. Don't make work harder than it needs to be for your equine partner. #Schleese #FitisEverything #SaddleFit #Horse #Equestrian #Equine #horselife #horselove #horsestagram #horsesoninstagram #Saddles #Saddle #Dressage #Horsebackriding #Horses #EquinePhotography #SaddleFitting #SchleeseSaddle #SchleeseSaddlery See more
