To make a pianist a good improviser, you have to develop your attention and the spirit of instinctive adaptation that Professor Forel calls supple (plastique)... intelligence. This is the result of movement /muscle memory and their impressions in the brain. We must develop the automatisms of instinct, which are the product of numerous repetitions of our sensations and feelings. Pianists must succeed in playing without worrying about the material way in which they play, just as the child walks without counting his steps or controlling his feet, knees and thighs. The role of the good educator is to free the pupil’s mind of all the pedantic instructions which the traditionalists rehash at us, and to uproot all the prejudices with which the establishment stuffs our heads. Good educators will seek to create in the pre-professional musician the simultaneity of unconscious acts and conscious acts, to invoke and facilitate their exchanges, to establish rapid links between the faculties of will and reaction, imagination, analysis, realization and creation.
