Today we continue our focus on #blackhistorymonth as we look into the amazing life of Viola Desmond, a businesswoman in Halifax, Nova Scotia who became an activist and civil rights leader. On Nov. 8, 1946 in a nearby town called New Glasgow, Desmond bought a ticket for a 7pm showing of the movie "The Dark Mirror". Ignoring the unwritten rules of the segregated theatre where black people were told to sit in the second level, she took a seat on the main floor. After refusing ...to relocate, she was arrested, physically carried out of the theatre, and taken to jail for the night. Desmond's case became one of the most pulicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history, and helped to start the modern civil rights movement in the country. She fought to overturn her conviction until her death in 1965. In 2010, she was granted the first posthumous pardon in Canada (by Nova Scotia's first black female lieutenant-governor Mayann Francis), as the government apologized to the Desmond family and acknowledged that she was rightfully resisting racial discrimination. After being featured on a postage stamp in 2012, Viola became the first woman to appear alone on a Canadian bank note, as her face can be found on the ten dollar bill. Viola once said "Do your little bit of good where you are, it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world."#blackhistory #violadesmond #violadesmondbill #blackhistoryfacts See more

There are many reasons why we are excited for Super Bowl LV this Sunday. It's a great matchup between two powerful teams with interesting storylines, and of course everyone loves the commercials and Super Bowl snacks. Our very own Zach Collaros @zach.collaros.7 played a part in the career of KC superstar tight end Travis Kelce @killatrav by throwing him perfectly spiralled passes at the University of Cincinnati. Zach owns Scholars of Burlington South & Scholars of Richmond Hill, and will be hoping Kelce wins his second Super Bowl ring so that he might let him wear it for a few minutes. They have a great friendship, which we will tell you more about as the big game approaches. #29-27 #traviskelce #kansascitychiefs #superbowl #superbowlLV #chiefs #chiefsfootball #tombrady

For day two of #blackhistorymonth we would like to tell you about an amazing woman, Mary Ann Shad Cary. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware on Oct 9 1823. Shadd Cary's family was involved in the Underground Railroad assisting those fleeing slavery, and while growing up the family's home served as a refuge for fugitive slaves. After the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which "required that all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters" Mary's father... A. D. Shadd moved the family to Ontario, Canada, where he became one of the first black men in the country to be elected to political office. Mary settled in Windsor, Ontario where in 1853 she founded an anti-slavery paper called "The Provincial Freeman". The first issue was published in Toronto on March 24, 1853 and it made her the first black female publisher in North America, and the first female publisher in Canada. She travelled widely in Canada and the US, taking significant risks to increase subscription to the paper and to give aid to runaway slaves. After returning to the US during the Civil War to help enlist black volunteers into the Union Army, she went back to Wilmington to teach in black schools. She then attended Howard University School of Law and in 1883 at the age of 60 became only the second black woman in the United States to earn a law degree. She continued her work writing in newspapers and working for black rights and women's rights. Before she died of cancer in June of 1893 she became the first African-American woman to vote in a national election. These are just a few of her accomplishments! Look her up online to learn more.#blackhistory #blackhistoryfacts See more

Here at Scholars we get a first-hand look at all the ways that children learn differently. For some, learning may take longer or they may need extra attention and care to help guide them through certain ideas or concepts. This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. Approximately 1 in 5 children have these learning and thinking differences. They are caused by variations in how the brain processe...s information, but it's unrelated to intelligence. It just means that these children need strategies and support systems to help them thrive, yet only a small number of children who learn and think differently receive specialized instruction. At Scholars, we are dedicated to helping students with these issues to get over any learning hurdles that they may have and to reach their full potential. Let's work together to ensure all children are well supported!#autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismfamily #sped #spedteacher #adhd #adhdawareness #adhdparenting #adhdlife #adhdsupport #adhdkids #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexiaeducation #dyslexiasupport See more
