Friday Feature: EcoThailand Foundation New year and getting back on track, or rather back to our Feature Fridays although we’re slightly behind. This week, we travel to the beautiful Southeast Asia and a country known for its tropical beaches and ornate temples. Need another hint, its capital is Bangkok and it is home almost 70 million people. ... There are many environmental issues plaguing the country including poaching of protected species. The national symbol is the elephant and while one might think there were plenty to represent the country, their population has fallen from approximately 100,000 in 1850 to less than 3,000 at present. That is where the efforts of EcoThailand come in. Based in the Surat Thani province, they endeavour to engage the community through the mindset of ‘Build Back Better’. They work in the nearby Thai Gulf, recognizing that the sea represents a critical food source for many Thai people. There has been a major depletion in the stock of sea creatures and they started a number of crab bank sites along Southern Thailand with the support of the University of Walailuck and the National Research Council of Thailand. If you’d like to support their efforts or get involved yourself, reach out to their team at ecothailand.org. Also check our their social media feeds linked above to learn about program opportunities. : Prasong Kotcharkrai Charity ID: Thai Reg. 9/2560 & 2/2561, #scienceandnature #nature #naturelovers #forestbathing #forestry #naturesbeauty #ecotherapy #shinrinyoku #horticulturelife #horticulturetherapy #plantlife #vitaminN #naturephotography #biophilia #conservation #plantbased #science #instagood #tree #green #wanderlust #wellness #health #healthlifestyle #healthiswealth # #thailand # #crabbanks #SuratThani See more

The global population currently sits at approximately 8 billion humans, with 7 billion of us having been born in only the last 200 years. To put that in perspective, it took almost 2 million years to reach 1 billion humans! Truly a testament to our growth, figuratively and literally, as a civilization. That rapid explosion in humankind begs the question, will there come a tipping point? Will we reach that moment when the human population becomes unsustainable? That’s ex...actly what British economist Thomas Malthus explored with the Malthusian Theory of Population. He argued that the systems in place that currently meet our demand for food and sustenance can only go so far. That means at some point in the (arguably) near-future, there will be too many mouths to feed leading to death on a global scale. The unfortunate reality of this theory, as with many others, is that the catastrophe will impact low-income countries and peoples who cannot afford to play the game of fate. That shortage of food could snow ball into war as nations try to secure their supply. This slippery slope argument paints a dark picture of the future our grandchildren may face, and as such, he proposed preventative checks including family planning, late marriages and celibacy. Now the fun reveal, he predicted that in his writings from 1798 and we actually haven’t faced this crisis to the degree he thought. Humans have gotten more innovative with food growth, meaning less land is needed for the same yield. This is also where ideas such as vertical farming take root. Global trade has also made it easier to exchange goods across nation lines and has helped allay this apocalyptic future he predicted. How do you see us innovating food in the years to come? : Lukas Goumbik #scienceandnature #nature #naturelovers #forestbathing #forestry #naturesbeauty #ecotherapy #shinrinyoku #horticulturelife #horticulturetherapy #plantlife #vitaminN #naturephotography #biophilia #conservation #plantbased #science #instagood #tree #green #wanderlust #wellness #health #healthlifestyle #healthiswealth # #malthusianism #singularity #populationexplosion #foodsupplychain See more
