I shed tears yesterday because i reflected on every moment i’ve ever smiled in an elevator (even if i was unhappy) to make sure whoever else was in it felt like i wasn’t a threat. I reflected on every-time i proactively walked off the side walk onto the grass to let a white family continue about their walk without having to split up to let me pass. I reflected on the fact that i live my life in a way that everything i do creates a perception of every person who looks like me.... I speak ‘propper’ around white people, i make sure not to speak aggressively, i operate lowkey. Ive thought for my whole life that this was my personality. Its not. Its how I’ve trained myself to behave since a child because because as a black man the media has made everyone feel like im potentially dangerous. My parents knew that if i wasnt aware of my conduct i could put myself in danger because the racist mindset north america was built on would kill me if i was myself. I thought for the longest time that id never been a victim of racism because i was never called a nigger growing up and had friends from all different parts of the earth. I am a victim. Ive always been. at my age it hurts to know that could have lived my life accurately if it wasn’t for racism. This is where it stops. This video of a white female spray painting #blacklivesmatter is one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen but the point im trying to make is that it shouldn’t be. See more
