New zinc-air battery is 'cheaper, safer and far longer-lasting than lithium-ion'. Canadian start-up Zinc8 Energy Solutions' hybrid flow battery can make wind or solar farms baseload and could transform the utility-scale energy-storage market, writes Leigh Collins in the below article. https://lnkd.in/e9YRC8T... According to our July 2020 PFS, our Scotia Mine will produce on average of 35M lbs of Zinc (first five years of the extended 14 year mine life) at an All-in-Sustaining Cost (ZnEq) of US$0.60/ lb.

According to Open Mineral, it appears current and near-term Zinc producers will have more tailwinds in 2021. ScoZinc Mining released in July of 2020 the PFS results for the Zn/Pb Scotia Mine with compelling economics: IRR 52% & pre-tax NPV (8%) C$156M. "Zinc: concentrate market gears up for extreme uncertainty in 2021 - by Ryan Cochrane... As we approach the final quarter of a turbulent and unprecedented year, major suppliers of zinc concentrate will remain increasingly aware of the continued and outsized (>>$100/dmt) economic advantage between selling on spot versus benchmark in 2020. We believe this will be an especially important consideration for how supply contracts are entered into for 2021. There appears to be little doubt that annual benchmark terms will fall in 2021, but what remains to be seen is whether some of the other market players advance discussions/negotiations early and make a sizeable push to enter quarterly or bi-annual contracts with a stronger reference to the spot market." https://www.linkedin.com//urn:li:activity:671371652972629/ Open Mineral Ryan Cochrane Ausenco SRK Consulting

In China, there is growing evidence that Chinese Copper and Zinc demand is picking up. Despite global macro being incredibly uncertain with coronavirus, Zinc is very interesting right now. Spot TCs are falling and Chinese smelters are actively looking to source imported spot lots as arb is presently favorable and domestic concentrate supply reasonably tight following slow return from Chinese miners after New Year. Supply growth expectations for the next 12-24 months are unlikely to pan out which will support zinc market. (Courtesy of Ryan Cochrane & Open Mineral). ScoZinc Mining has a fully permitted mine and mill in Nova Scotia, Canada and ScoZinc intends to re-open the mine as soon as possible.

China & Base Metals (via SP Angel London Research): Lead: mined supply 2018: 83% came from China Zinc: mine supply 2018: 76% from China... Conclusion: We further disruption of metal refining and mine production in China and Asia. This combined with new manufacturing confidence and restocking of inventory will likely continue to drive metals prices higher.

Zinc batteries turn heads as they triumph in New York innovation challenge (courtesy of SP Angel London Research): Zinc8 singed a 3-yr contract with the New York State Power Authority in January to develop a demonstration project. The project specifications were to produce back up power for a municipal or college building for 8 hrs at a cost of $250/kWh. (Bloomberg) The power authority is targeting 3 gigawatts of energy storage state-wide by 2030 as part of Governor Cuom...o’s pledged for 100% of New York’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2030. The Vancouver based Zinc8 is in the process of finding a suitable site for the project. Batteries built using Zinc do not catch fire like their lithium-ion compatriots, they run for longer and are cheaper as the metal is more widely available. (Lithium: $8500/ton, Zinc: $1984/ton) (Yahoo Finance) To date zinc batteries have been limited to hearing aids, until it was discovered they could be rechargeable on a commercial scale. Zinc-air systems similar to the one produced by Zinc8 draw in oxygen which then reacts with the porous zinc. The process of drawing in oxygen makes the batteries less flammable. Zinc is also a less toxic material than lithium which is corrosive when it comes into contact with the eyes or skin. See more
