Our friends at Scale Collaborative are studying the opportunities and challenges for non-profits to acquire local businesses that are at risk of closure due to lack of a succession plan. In theory, this is a win-win proposition for non-profits and local business owners seeking to transition ownership of their business. Buying an existing business allows non-profits to leapfrog the risky start-up stage associated with establishing a social enterprise. Selling to a non-profit owner allows local business owners to exit while ensuring their business continues to serve their community.

Today the #ThroneSpeech will lay out Canada’s roadmap to #COVID19 recovery. The Principles for a #JustRecovery were written and endorsed by 560 groups from across sectors. Through them we demand putting the health and wellbeing of peoples and ecosystems first by building an equitable, resilient, sustainable society. Between the pandemic, the crucial need for racial justice, widespread job loss, and a planet in the throes of warming, this year has been marked by fear & unrest.... To come out of this crisis stronger we need to care and provide for one another as we work towards resiliency. If Prime Minister @justinptrudeau is committing to #BuildBackBetter, we need to see the Just Recovery principles reflected in the Throne Speech: 1. Put people’s health and wellbeing first, no exceptions. 2. Strengthen the social safety net and provide relief directly to people. 3. Prioritize the needs of workers and communities. 4. Build resilience to prevent future crises. 5. Build solidarity and equity across communities, generations, and borders. 6. Uphold Indigenous rights and work in partnership with Indigenous peoples.

Premier John Horgan and Carole James, Minister of Finance, have released Stronger BC for Everyone: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan. The plan outlines the latest steps the Government of British Columbia is taking to help people, businesses and communities recover and come out of COVID-19 stronger and better prepared. B.C.’s total provincial response to the COVID-19 pandemic exceeds $8.25 billion. As British Columbians, we’ve been through a lot recently. We know our recovery won’t... happen overnight, but by focusing on people and taking care of each other, we will ensure there are better days ahead for all of us, said Premier Horgan. The next steps in B.C.’s recovery plan will help build a stronger, more resilient economy for everyone. The plan includes $1.5 billion in economic recovery spending measures that respond to immediate needs. This money was earmarked for recovery spending in the spring. It is in addition to $660 million in tax measures and more than $1.86 billion in federal and provincial restart funding for municipalities, transit and education. It also builds on B.C.’s record $22-billion investment in public infrastructure over the next three years. Those capital projects are estimated to create 100,000 direct and indirect jobs over the life of the projects. https://strongerbc.gov.bc.ca/

BC Government commits to study of bypass/alternative route for Hwy 101 with public consultation beginning next year. A safe, efficient Highway 101 is essential for people who live, work and travel on the Sunshine Coast, said Nicholas Simons, MLA for Powell River-Sunshine Coast. There are many opinions about how a bypass or alternative route could improve highway travel, and I look forward to leading public consultation in the coming year as we explore this idea further.
