Heads up, friends! I got an email from a previous client yesterday. It said: How are you doing ? I hope this email find you well... I need a little favor from you. Cheers [name of company, a small publisher] Since I mostly dealt with another person, the grammatical errors in his email didn't alarm me. I responded, saying it was nice to hear from him, and asked what I could do for him, thinking they might want a quick edit, or a file I'd edited previously. This is what I got back: Thanks for the quick response, i am sorry for bothering you with this mail, I need to get an Google Play Gift Card for my niece, It's her birthday but i can't do this now because I'm currently away and i tried purchasing online but unfortunately no luck with that. can you get it from any store around you? I'll pay back as soon as i am back. Kindly let me know if you can handle this. Await your soonest response. Cheers [name of small publisher] Uh. Huh. This time all the grammatical errors bothered me, as well as--well, the whole thing. Why would he be contacting a previous contractor to do him a favour? Where is he? Why doesn't he tell her he'll have something for her when he gets back from wherever he is? Etcetera, etcetera (yes, I am naturally suspicious of most people, ESPECIALLY when they start talking money). Knowing that the scammers who try to frighten people by saying they're from Canada Revenue or the IRS often say payment can be made with gift cards, I responded with: Ugh, wish I could help, but I'm immunocompromised and not going into any stores right now. Sorry! Didn't hear a peep back. Your best defense in things like this is to assume first that it's not legit. Be suspicious ALWAYS until you can verify for yourself whether or not this is someone you know or a real problem for yourself or others.
