Scriptophobic 05.02.2021

In the summer of 2004, I spent my Friday nights shilling concessions to people trying to catch the latest blockbuster releases. As they are today, back then most of the screens in my particular multiplex were occupied by sequels: Shrek 2, Spider-Man 2 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to name a few. And while I enjoyed tentpoles as much as the next person (Spider-Man 2 is still my favorite superhero flick), my tastes had started to shift and what I was truly interested in was sadly not afforded nearly as many screens as Mike Myers’ ogre-antics. A few months ago we discussed Kaiju and giant monsters that have attacked Canada. In my research for the article, I missed the biggest instance of Canadian monster rampage. Yeti: Giant of the 20th Century features a very humanlike Yeti trouncing through and destroying Toronto. This is not a film that hides its Canadiana like many Canuxploitation films, no this film is front and center a Canadian monster movie. America’s never had a rosy image of Mexico, seeing it either from a flawed economic perspective assuming everyone south of the border is poor or from a social perspective tainted by nationalist rhetoric and poor media sources that present the entire country as a playground for drug cartels. No surprise that with the current racist occupant of the White House, there’s a renewed wave of anti-Mexican sentiment sweeping the country. Welcome back to Everything But Bone, and today we are delving into an oft maligned genre, the found footage film. Never has a horror sub-genre been so debated, with fans either hating or loving it.
