So proud of this crew!!! First 2k training session and I threw an impromptu 2k at them. Nothing like a 2k to see what a 2k is all about, am I right? . . The real twist came when they requested I pace them. So, I pulled a 2k too . (Guess the joke was on me?) .... . For many of these athletes, this was their first 2k experience. For others, a benchmark to see where they’re at currently as compared to other times. Whether it’s your first time, your second time, or your hundredth, a 2k is a special beast. . . While fitness is certainly a large component of the overall score, it would be a mistake to underestimate the impact pacing and strategy can play. Over the next 12 weeks, we’ll be developing all the skills a solid 2k requires. . . I’m so incredibly proud of this group. I told them all at the end of the workout to feel proud of their effort - a 2k is no joke. Doing this training while separated by screens and distance can make it harder to feel like a team - but if there is anything I know about rowers, it’s that we know how to handle hard $hit!! . . To our SCULLHOUSE community - thank you! . Last week, you showed up for me in a big way. You shared encouragement, you emphasized, you strategized and we’re strong when I felt weak. . Please know that your support means everything. Know that every comment, like or note was and is truly appreciated. ... . We all have down days (maybe even weeks). No one can be strong all the time. This is a hard lesson for me. While I find it easy to accept this truth for others, I have difficulty applying it to myself. Thanks @lizkowpak for reminding me of this! . I guess one of the benefits of a good community is that they are ready to lift you up when you fall down. . Thank you for being strong when I wasn’t. . Today is a new day. Today I’m ready. . Dear SCULLHOUSE community - this second closure until November 7th feels especially hard. . Right now, I’m struggling to identify my feelings, let alone find the right words. . I used to live by the Nietzsche quote that which does not kill us makes us stronger. It was my mantra when I encountered difficulty. It saw me through some epic challenges. ... . This feels different. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think because so much of what’s happening is out of my control. . We created a safe space for people to move, to sweat, to come together for support in a time when we ALL need support. . Our bodies need to move to stay healthy. Our immune system stays strong when our bodies are strong. Our minds stay strong when we take care of our mental health. Post sweat endorphins play a key role in mental health. . Yet - we are being forced to shut our doors. We are being told that we are unsafe - while a dance class or organized sport is safe. Those activities, which both see people sweating and breathing heavily, are different somehow? I don’t understand this differentiation. . I absolutely do not want to endanger anyone, let alone the community I care so much about, but I don’t see the logic. . To say the past 7 months have been a struggle is a huge understatement. Yes, there are always ups and downs running a small business. Yes, we will keep fighting to survive this additional closure. But, right now, it feels as though the rug has been ripped out from under us. It is with a heavy heart that we close our doors once again. . While we believe we have taken all possible precautions to keep our team and community safe during these challenging times, the Ontario government has mandated the closure of all indoor fitness facilities for 28 days. . We will miss our classes together for this period and hope that after the 28 day mandated closure, we can re-open. ... . Our online rowing classes will continue and we will again be adding in mat only classes while our doors are closed. For members with an active membership, you can use that membership towards our online classes (either rowing or mat). . We plan to continue to take every precaution as we move forwards. .... . Our classes have been limited to 10 since we opened. . . We wear masks until class begins and after class finishes. . . All rowing stations are spaced more than 2 m apart. . . We have plexiglass barriers between our front and back rows. . . Today I struggled... . . First, let me say I am so thankful for our SCULLHOUSE community and the messages of support I have received. Each and every note matters. Each and every thoughtful word counts. And I am incredibly blessed and thankful. .... . Things for all of us are so uncertain and scary right now. As a small business owner, I feel this and I mean I FEEL this - today especially. . We have been doing our best to respond to the daily changes: we have rented out ergs, started online rowing classes, and posted at home workouts to stay connected with our incredible community. We have been seeing the silver lining and making lemonade from the lemons. . It’s great that this has allowed us to connect with members not physically close anymore and embrace new (for us) technology. . That being said, today it hit me. I don’t know how long we will be closed. It is frightening. My home away from home is empty - missing ergs, missing people, friends, and most of all the positive energy our community shares that I have come to depend on. . I miss seeing your smiling sweaty faces! I miss our high fives! I miss our collective pursuit of feeling strong, powerful and connected. . Today, I feel alone (although I know I am not). Today, I feel defeated (although I know I will keep on going). Today, I feel sad for what I have lost (although I know there is still much to gain). . So, if, in the midst of these crazy and trying days, you have an off day, know you are not alone in those feelings. Know that even those we think of as strong, sometimes have bad days too. And most importantly know that sometimes all we have to do to get to the other side of those days is acknowledge our feelings, ask for help, and remember that this too shall pass. . This month we have been working on our hang. Hang requires not only muscle engagement, but relaxation as well. . . In order to feel suspended between the handle and the feet, we need to relax our shoulders so they sink down away from the ears. Next, we focus on a very slight downward sensation through the hands in the handle to help us engage our lats. .... . Our core must also be actively working to connect the legs to the handle. Without the core connecting the two, we will never be able to achieve hang. . . Try the above exercise with a partner to see if you are able to feel the hang on the handle and get your bum lifted off the seat. Then from there, try to feel that same sensation with every stroke you take. Damper Setting Part 2 - How does it relate to resistance? . As discussed last week, the damper or the drag factor does not determine the resistance on the erg. Of course, there is an effect on the resistance, but resistance comes from much more than just that setting. . How much you push with your legs, pry with your core and accelerate the handle with the arms, determines the resistance you feel.... . The more work you put into the stroke, the more resistance you generate. . A common misconception with the drag factor is that the higher the drag we row with, the better our splits will be. . Our splits on the machine will be best when we are generating as much force as we possibly can. Some athletes can generate this force very quickly, other athletes tend to generate this force more slowly. . A lower drag factor actually requires more explosiveness to generate force - your power must be delivered more quickly. A higher drag factor requires less explosiveness - the power is delivered more slowly over the course of the stroke. . If you know you're a very explosive athlete, try setting your drag factor to the lower range of what was recommended last week. Damper Setting Part 1 - where should we set it? . Let's start with what the damper setting does. The damper setting adjusts the amount of air that passes through the flywheel. While changing the damper setting does change the feel of the stroke, it does not directly determine the resistance. Resistance is determined by the speed of the rotating flywheel inside the cage. . While you've heard us recommend setting the damper to between 3 and 6 in class, we're going to get... a bit more specific with you here. Because the damper is not a precise way to measure resistance, we're going to talk about setting to a particular drag factor instead. . The drag factor is much more precise as it takes into account specific considerations of the machine, environment, etc. A drag setting of 110 will feel virtually identical on any machine. A damper setting of 3 on two different machines could feel very different. . Most "open weight" men (as the weight class is used in rowing is anyone above 70kg), will row at a drag factor of around 130. "Light weight" men may row slightly lower than this, anywhere between 120 and 130. . Generally "open weight" women (as the weight class is used in rowing is anyone above 57kg), will row around 120 drag. "Light weight" women will row anywhere between 110 and 120. . How do you set the drag factor? Next time you sit down on the erg, on your monitor press MORE OPTIONS, from the second screen, press DISPLAY DRAG FACTOR. Take a few strokes and see what the number is. . Let’s talk about breathing. You know, that thing you automatically do about 23,040 times a day and never really think about. Well, let’s think about it for a moment. - - - When do we breathe during the rowing stroke?... - - Let’s start by saying that not everyone follows the same breathing pattern. There are two common breath patterns used by rowers. - - Some rowers take a 1:1 stroke to breath ratio. Some others take more of a 1:2 stroke to breath ratio. - - Breaking that down further, every rower exhales at the finish position. That’s when the legs are down straight, the handle is into the chest and the torso is in the layback position. - - Regardless of breath pattern, we always exhale during the hard portion of the stroke - the drive. - - The inhalation occurs during the recovery phase of the stroke, as you are contracting the hamstrings bringing your body back to the catch position. - - That general pattern is universal. Where the breath patterns diverge for some rowers is whether or not they take a small mini-breath at the catch. - - The mini-breath at the catch helps if you feel that you are not getting enough oxygen at the 1:1 breath ratio. The added benefit of this pattern is that because you take a small inhalation right at the catch, this helps you brace your core for the power phase of the stroke, the drive. - - What is your breathing pattern? When was the last time you did something that was outside of your comfort zone? . . When was the last time you gave yourself the opportunity to prove to yourself just how strong you can be? .... . Two weeks ago, this amazing group of athletes (plus a few camera shy others), tackled rowing a half or full marathon. For those not familiar with the distances, that’s 21,098m and 42,195m, respectively, for the record! . . Some of our athletes were facing this challenge for the first time, for others it was a second effort, having completed the inaugural #scullmarathon last year. . . For everyone, it was a day that challenged limits - not only the physical challenge of rowing the distance, but the mental challenge of staying focused, not letting the doubts distract you, and telling your body to do something that is uncomfortable at best and rather painful at worst. . . These athletes each showed up and not only completed but crushed the challenge they set for themselves. Regardless of finishing time, completion of this epic feat is something to be immensely proud of. . . The erg studio that day was electric - filed with positive energy, team spirit, and determination. Supported by our fellow athletes, friends and coaches, we faced fear, met challenge head on, and learned that the things that take us outside of our comfort zone are often the most rewarding to look back on having accomplished! . . Meet Colleen - she is the world record holder in her age category for the 24 hour distance row. Needless to say, she hung in there for our 55 minute class!! . .
