I just received a call from one of our bus drivers who was stopped on Chowat Road and told there is a cougar in the area. The resident's dogs chased it away. We might want to put the word out about this. Steve Beier

September 18, 2020 : , Dear Community Leaders,... Fraser Health Authority is sending this letter in support of the actions being taken to protect our communities from wildfire smoke. In the Lower Mainland, we have been experiencing extremely poor air quality as a result of wildfires occurring south of the border. These conditions may continue based on wildfire activity in the USA. Fraser Health has the following recommendations to prevent and reduce the negative health impacts of wildfire smoke on our communities. Wildfire smoke is a mixture of gases and fine particles that can cause irritation of eyes, respiratory system, and the worsening of existing heart and lung disease. The length of exposure to wildfire smoke, as well as a person’s age and underlying health conditions, determine the health impact. Children, older adults and those with respiratory conditions or other chronic illnesses are at higher risk from the effects of wildfire smoke. Health impacts from wildfire smoke will improve as the air quality improves. More information can be found on Fraser Health’s Website, which can be shared with your community. Reducing exposure to wildfire smoke is the best way to protect health. Actions that people can take to reduce exposure to wildfire smoke include: Limit time spent outdoors Keep windows and doors closed when possible For homes with air conditioners, ensure that units are set to recirculate the air. If you have an indoor air purifier, use it. Reduce physical activity, particularly strenuous activity outdoors: the harder you breathe, the more smoke you inhale Seek out public indoor spaces with cleaner air (i.e. shopping malls, community centres, libraries, clean air shelters) Here is link for more information from Fraser Health on air quality. https://www.fraserhealth.ca/health-topics-a-to/air-quality

Covid 19 is reaching First Nations communities. We are all alarmed by the news that several First Nations communities in BC are experiencing outbreaks of Covid 19. It has hit close to home with 37 cases in Squamish Nation and Tla’amin First Nation declaring a state of emergency (two elders in hospital). Our thoughts and prayers go out to these communities as so many are scared and the risks of virus transmission are increasing. It is important to note that some of the outbrea...ks are due to large gatherings happening in community. We want to remind Seabird community members to avoid large gatherings. This can be hard, especially when we have lost a loved one. We are urging everyone to find ways to pay respects and observe cultural practices while at the same time being Covid safe, with people who are not in your bubble. This includes keeping your distance, and keeping visits short and outside if possible. With kids back in school, please remember all the Covid safety protocols. Stay home when you are sick, wash your hands often, wear a mask when in public places, and practice physical distancing. Let’s hold the line to keep Covid out of Seabird.
