Today is perfect float flying weather. It might be known as the lowest form of flying, but the truth is, when it is a grey day at the airport, you can still play on the water. Our instructors are amazing. Steve Lane is our primary float instructor for the Seaplane Rating. Steve spent the first 13 years of his career flying Beavers and Otters out of Bella Bella, Campbell River, Nanaimo, and Victoria, then headed off to the Antilles, Nicaragua, Sri Lanka and the Maldives, fly...ing Otters, Twin Otters and Caravans to end up with about 22,000 hours total time, 18,000 hours on floats. He is a licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, is approved as a Caravan Ground and Flight Instructor, and owns a Murphy Rebel. Greg Koopman is the Chief Pilot for Bella Coola Air and has been flying on floats for many years. Greg is the President of Sealand Aerospace, the custom manufacturing company that assembles Twin Otter control surfaces for Viking Air. He worked as a maintenance engineer with Sealand Aviation since 1985 with breaks while he pursued his other career as a commercial pilot. He flew for Tweedsmuir Air Service, AvNorth, Buffalo Airways, WagAir, Western Straits Air, MJM Air and Air Cab and is the flight test pilot and ferry pilot for Sealand Aviation. He has flown over 6000 hours on floats. On weekends he escapes to local hideaways in his Cessna 180 on floats. Ian Lamont is the CFI, a Class 1 instructor who has been instructing in the Campbell River area for many years and at Sealand Flight since the company started in 2014. As well as working as a commercial pilot, Ian owned and operated a local scuba dive school, and was a full-time counsellor and manager for a social service agency. Ian amassed significant time on floats while working at Air Tindi.
