Many of us feel the impact of seasonal affective disorder at this time every year. The pandemic may intensify this both by increasing our levels anxiety and by removing some of the coping options we would normally use, such as getting together with groups of friends or family. Fear and anxiety a normal feelings for us to have when things happen that make us feel threatened or out of control. Sometimes those feelings lead us to panic and react without thinking. Acting impulsively then causes us further harm. When feelings start to get overwhelming simple mindfulness tools can prevent us from getting stuck in the panic cycle. Stop whatever you are doing, just for a moment.... Take a deep breath - focus on your breathing to calm your thoughts. Observe the situation as if you are outside of it. Notice your feelings. Remember that feelings aren't facts. Just by taking a step away you may find your anxiety starts to calm down. Proceed; once you have taken a moment to assess the situation decide how you want to respond and proceed.
