Events that draw crowds of people look different in 2020. Despite the challenges we face there are still important occasions that are worthy of observance and respect. One such important event is the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies. Each year, the Town of Sylvan Lake partners with our local Legion to host the Remembrance Day ceremonies and that partnership will continue this year, albeit a little differently. I invite you to join us in honoring those Canadians who have se...rved and sacrificed for our nation, and nations around the world. The Sylvan Lake Remembrance Day ceremonies will be broadcast online, November 11 beginning at 10:30am. Please join us in giving honour where honour is due. We will remember them.

Wow. This is a powerful video. I am grateful for the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre and the vital help that they provide to central Alberta youth and families who need it. I feel so fortunate to know this group and to have been able to play a small part in the establishment of this priceless movement in our region. Know this: you are not alone. https://youtu.be/Y0xLWCKdjrc... #BeBrave

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the SOLD OUT Gord Bamford concert in Sylvan Lake, tonight! A special thanks to Gord Bamford, Gords team, Vesta Energy, and staff at the Town of Sylvan Lake for working hard to bring us great music and break the concert drought we have had, during the pandemic response. Thank you to the teams of people who worked hard and creativly to prepare the site, keep everyone safe, and to abide by AHS guidelines. ... I was so glad to see so many happy people, outside and enjoying socially distanced live music in Sylvan Lake! Its good to be alive! Its good to be a Sylvan Laker! I love this town!

The Recreation, Arts and Culture Grant is an annual funding program for festivals, events, sporting events and programs. Boy, it was an adventure this morning! I was happy to be working together with some diehard volunteers from the Alberta Underwater Council, Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake, and a collection of big-hearted Sylvan Lakers for the annual Underwater Cleanup. The Underwater Cleanup, which is organized each year by the Alberta Underwater Council, was not widely advertised this year, for risk of attracting a crowd that could exceed the limits on gatherings that have been set out by AHS ...to prevent the spread of covid-19. (So don't feel bad if you missed it! We'd love your help next time!) Nonetheless some wonderful scuba divers, very talented paddlers, and onshore volunteers braved the winds and waves that were kicked up on Sylvan Lake this morning, to clean up all the letter we could find. Underwater visibility was low today due to all the wave action, which meant a somewhar smaller haul of underwater litter than we typically see. Every single bit helps, and I am grateful for all of the volunteers that came out to help and lend a hand (or a flipper)! Interesting finds this year included: A nerf gun, a blackberry cell phone (remember those), binoculars, underwear, and most of a skateboard; on top of the usual, large amount of littered beverage containers, fishing line/hooks/lures, hockey pucks, golf balls, and small garbage left behind on shore like cigarette butts and bread ties. Thanks to Tim Horton's Sylvan Lake for keeping us warm with coffee, hot chocolate, and muffins, and thanks to everyone who helps to keep the lake that we love, clean and free of litter all year round! Here's a video of the conditions we were dealing with today. We hope to see you in May 2021 for the springtime "Team Up to Clean Up" and September 2021 for the next Sylvan Lake Underwater Cleanup!

Its smile cookie week! A sweet treat for a good cause. Today through Sunday, smile cookies are on sale at our Sylvan Lake Tim Hortons. Again this year, the proceeds from all smile cookies sold in Sylvan Lake go towards our much needed Advanced Ambulatory Care Service.... Thanks to our member of Parliament Blaine Calkins for braving a chilly morning to join us in the Drive-Thru, to get the word out! I encourage everyone to stop in for a smile cookie, this week!

Today, Councillor Teresa Rilling and I were honoured to take part in the opening ceremonies for this years Flags of Remembrance tribute, with Veterans Voices of Canada and volunteers from across the region. Of course, things looked different this year, with extra safety precautions and physical distancing. There was not the usual grand ceremony we have grown used to. The smaller operation was inspiring, in a new way. There were dedicated volunteers working to assemble and i...nstall the flags. There were people installing hardware and the ever-important remembrance and tribute plaques. There were veterans, police officers, firefighters, and the families and friends of those who have served. Together we worked to install the Flags of Remembrance tribute, for all to see. I felt honored to be part of the smaller-than-normal ceremony, to see the heart and hard work of the dedicated group that was present, to hear the bagpipes play, and to observe a moment of silence together. The Flags of Remembrance tribute helps us all to create a season of remembrance, for those who have served. The Canadian flags will fly and tribute plaques will stand in Centennial Park, from September 12th to November 12th. I encourage you to make your way down to Centennial Park and walk the flag line. I encourage you to read the names on the plaques, and give honour where honour is due. Take a moment to remember those who serve and to those who have served, to those we have lost, to those who are missing, and to the unknown soldier. Thank you to all of the volunteers and sponsors who make this tribute possible. It is an inspiring sight to see, here in Sylvan Lake.

With the August/Heritage Day Long Weekend approaching, the Town of Sylvan Lake is reminding the public to please respect public health orders, as well as local ...bylaws. The Towns priority is the health and safety of the public. COVID-19 impacts how we manage our waterfront during the warmer, and thus busier days of the summer. Because of this, throughout the month of August, Lakeshore Drive, between 50 Street and 46 Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic every weekend (Saturday Sunday), to provide more space for physical distancing, and a better visitor experience.
