Sometimes it doesn’t even take a windstorm to knock out the power! This old hydro pole was rotted at the base and came crashing down a couple of weekends ago.It took out the hydro from the house and required an emergency reconnect after a new pole was installed.

This home had an old fuse panel that someone had used as a junction box. The panel was still live and not in use. An electrical disaster waiting to happen. Changed it out for a real junction box to bring it up to code and make it safe.

Overloaded Circuits: Have you ever used a space heater or electric fireplace and had your living room breaker trip? Many people don't take the time to read the specifications of small home appliances and don't understand how the amount of power drawn by those appliances adds up. Many automatically assume that they had a bad breaker. In a large number of cases, that's just not true.... A recent example would be a clothing iron seen in a store. The iron advertises a higher wattage meant to give you better results. The iron boasts 1800 watts of power. Just for comparison purposes, the average microwave runs on 1000 watts and the average fridge runs on 1200 watts. Under both the Ontario Electrical Code and the Canadian Electrical Code, microwaves and fridges are required to be plugged into outlets that are on dedicated circuits... meaning only that one appliance is on its own breaker in your electrical panel. The reason for this is that a 15 amp breaker, which is one of the most common breakers in an electrical panel, only has the capacity to run up to 1800 watts of power before it trips, but you run the risk of weakening the breaker by running it at full capacity. Electrical code states that each breaker is only allowed to have around 80% of it's maximum load installed on it... meaning a 15 amp breaker is only supposed to be loaded with up to 12 amps of power or 1440 watts to prevent damage to the breaker. The average living room circuit is on a 15 amp breaker, which is meant to power your light fixtures, TV, etc. The breaker powering it is usually loaded so that if you were running everything at once, you would likely only be using around 80% of the maximum capacity for power. If you were to plug in and use the iron mentioned above so that you could watch TV while ironing your clothes, there is a good chance that your breaker is going to trip because you've just overloaded the circuit. Plus by doing so, the breaker will be weakened by the overload of power and will likely need to be replaced as a result. And you will still need a dedicated circuit to run the appliance that caused the overload.
