Our lesson barns need us now more than ever. I’ve heard stories of riding schools having to sell valuable school horses just to make ends meet. Those valuable school horses may have taught the next great Canadian rider. We all started at a lesson barn. Every one of us.including Olympic riders. Without th...e riding schools, how are our future Olympians going to be found and developed? What about the vets, farriers, nutritionists, tack store owners, etc. When I was 6 years old, I went to a summer riding camp I was hooked from that point on, but I also decided I wanted to one day go to the University of Guelph to be an equine vet. The vet thing never worked out, but I did go to Guelph. I’m now a financial advisor and I am devoting a lot of time to helping equine professionals navigate their way through the world of finance. I have clients that are currently drawing funds out of their cash value life insurance policies. Their market based portfolios have been impacted by COVID -19. But the cash, growth and tax preferred nature of the funds in their policies remains unaffected. This was a result of great planning and foresight from their advisor who helped set these policies up years ago. This might be a good time to (virtually) meet with your insurance advisor to discuss creating a hedge for your market based investments using insurance. I usually recommend that 20% of your portfolio be guaranteed and protected using insurance.
