In the spirit of the holiday season, Seaspan donated $10,000 CAD to The Mission to Seafarers and the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in the month of December. With over 4,800 seafarers employed with Seaspan, The Mission to Seafarers is a global organization we are happy to support with its mission to care for seafarers and their families across the world. The Mission to Seafarers lends support by providing resources and a ‘home away from home’ while seafarers spend many months at sea. The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation has been a long-standing local charity that Seaspan has supported for its efforts in bringing communities together and transforming children’s health care across the province.

The Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) Certification will be required of all ships trading in the European Union region as of December 31, 2020. Rather than focus only on those vessels we have trading in the EU today, on December 14, 2020, Seaspan successfully gained certification for 112 vessels in 2020, making our entire fleet IHM certified. This approach ensures maximum trading flexibility for our customers, and achieves early compliance with the not-yet-ratified Hong Kong International Convention for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships, also known as the Hong Kong Convention. On the morning of September 13, 2020, upon request from the United States Coast Guard, Seaspan’s COSCO Malaysia responded to a small sailboat in distress roughly 27 nautical miles off the west coast of Florida, USA. All four individuals aboard the sailing boat were rescued, given aid by COSCO Malaysia’s crew, and taken ashore to Tampa, Florida. We applaud the outstanding efforts of the COSCO Malaysia crew and wish the best to our new friends.

Our seafarers from Sri Lanka have always volunteered for noble causes to celebrate June’s annual IMO Day of the Seafarer. This year, to reinforce and extend our commitment to the environment both onboard and ashore, a reforestation drive was organized at Bopagama, Attanagalla. Fortunately, Sri Lanka has been one of the more successful countries in managing the COVID-19 outbreak, and the very low rates in June allowed us to undertake the campaign safely. To ensure that the sap...lings were planted in a sustainable manner, local villagers came forward to provide training and guidance to our team. After the strict lockdown, the event provided a welcome break for our seafarers to have fun and interact with each other onshore. In true Sri Lankan style, the welcome was warm and the food delicious. To the surprise of villagers, our industrious seafarers quickly learnt the intricacies of pairing the right saplings with the correct location to foster growth. With each sapling planted, a small prayer was whispered for the safety of the courageous souls at sea. Before heading home, the locals shared the location of their secret waterfall to complete the nature-filled day. At the end of the day, our seafarers donated books to the children of the village, and agricultural equipment to the participating villagers as token of our gratitude.

To celebrate last month’s Day of the Seafarer, our Odessa Crewing Team organized an exciting day of kayaking. More than 30 seafarers, and a few of their families, participated in the day’s fun races and activities. This day served as a great opportunity for seafarers to celebrate and reconnect with one another - while maintaining proper social distancing. #SeafarersAreKeyWorkers

With the departure of the 14,000 TEU YM Welcome from Yiu Lian Dockyard’s anchorage after her successful sea trials, Seaspan’s Scrubber Project production phase is complete. The five 10,000 TEU vessels and five 14,000 TEU vessels that have successfully undergone scrubber retrofits constitute the largest capital program our company has undertaken outside of newbuilding projects. The sheer scale of the equipment and technological requirements constituted a challenge often underestimated by the industry, while the recent epidemic raised further challenges. Despite these obstacles, thanks to the outstanding strength and dedication of all our teams involved the project has been a tremendous success!

Seaspan has been able to conduct essential crew changes during calls to specific ports over the past three months, despite the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. A recent example of this success are these five happy seafarers, whose relief was coordinated in South Korea. These crew changes would not be possible without our dedicated shore-based teams and the assistance of multiple international maritime authorities. This is only the beginning, and in the coming weeks, we will work to coordinate even more crew changes at various ports.
