Day 6 and almost ready for Monday’s opening !!
Agriculture and the pivotal role of the farmer in society is vastly under appreciated.
Trying something new. Digging out small seedlings of mustard greens and planting in four packs.
This morning’s temperatures at our house... Outdoors and in my greenhouse with a couple of holes that need repair... Also the breeze chill made it cooler outdoors.
Part of the valuable work of the United Nations is providing better data on a global scale More than 80 percent of all farms globally are below two hectares. Family farms occupy around 70-80 percent of farmland and produce more than 80 percent of the world's food in value terms. Women perform nearly 50 percent of farm labor but hold only 15 percent of farm land. There’s another interesting aspect of the agricultural sector which is indicated in the "Statistical Yearbook" of t...he United Nations is connected to labor. Agriculture has the highest incidence of unpaid child labor, starting from the ages of between five and seven years old, and the sector with the youngest minimum work entry age. One example illustrates the issue: about 60 percent of workers under the age of 18, of which 129 million children, are in found in the agricultural sector. See more
This is about the importance of agriculture as the foundation of society.
Also part of yesterday’s satisfying, long postponed undertakings was digging and dividing some of the pulmonaria that’s spreading in my rugosa thicket. It’s the... type of project that comes to mind every time I walk by on my way to the compost area, and for years it’s been on my delayed gratification list. See more
Good barely still morning! Almost afternoon! Things were pretty windy here this morning as everyone surely noticed. I had cleaned up a neglected corner on the p...roperty yesterday, which meant relocating some winter tires on rims from my F 150. They came in very handy earlier this morning as ballast on my rubber barn roof which was starting to billow precariously! See more
This is my com-post! The pile went largely neglected all last season. It’s good compost after sitting between one and two years. The whole thing is sitting on a... huge piece of salvaged rubber roofing membrane, making it easy to handle and to eliminate weed roots during the screening process. See more
Just to be responsible I will include a couple of screen shots from an excellent article on kale:
Some of you might be getting tired of my kale obsession but I’m going to push it a little more...
Thanks Robert I look forward to reading this https://onestrawrevolution.net/ecological-farming-a-conve/
One of my favourite agriculturalists
I was doing some backyard compost strip mining today
Congratulations

Everything is jumping with the spring weather and longer days. Birds are singing those spring songs, early blossoms are out and the grass is greening.
It’s time to catch up on some posting. These as everyone knows, are called snowdrops, presumably because they emerge and bloom in late winter.
Lots of things happening in nature now to remind us spring is here! My friends who have gold fish and koi can say the blue heron has started fishing again at their place. Something should be done with the greens growing in my un heated greenhouse. And it’s time to go on weed patrol for this little plant, a cress-like member of the mustard family, before it makes its little explosive seeds heads.
Very nice harp music by Saeed
Started garden cleanups this week. Found these in my back lawn....
Signs of progress: kale seedlings making adolescent leaves and a warm greenhouse!
More about buds...
Jan 23/20 Life in the greenhouse late January. Swiss chard from last year still looking very much alive, hundreds of seedlings from the kale plants that were removed in the fall. Bales of straw, that were meant to be used as mulch, now growing sprouts of oats.

This is the theme for tonight. There are many references in the Baha’i writings on the subject of the human soul. I am looking for references in the sacred wri...tings of other religions, such as Buddhist, Zoroastrian, Moslem, Jewish and Christian and others. I am very busy today, perhaps some other google experts can help me.... THIS WEEK'S THURSDAY EVENING DEVOTIONAL:The Nature of the Human Soul Hi Friends The Thursday evening devotional will draw from sacred writings of the world regarding the human soul.Everyone is invited to bring a passage on this theme. All are welcome 7:00-9:00 PM Thursday 3187 Hwy ! Port Maitland cheers Graham
We’re pleased with our new water feature...
Coreopsis provides hardy, perennial, drought tolerant yellow in the garden in August.
People have been noticing this rambler now that it’s blooming. I’ve lost the tag and forgotten it’s name... The day Lily is Frank Hal’s.
Endless Summer is a good name for this modern hydrangea. Unlike some older varieties it blooms on the new wood. This means that although the upper buds may be killed by severe winter weather, as long as there are buds near the base that are protected it will make flower bearing branches, and do so quite early. On older varieties those surviving basal buds make branches that will not flower until the following year. Therefore these new branches need protection so that the buds that will flower next year survive the winter.
Some shots from Seaview Gardens
Spring is progressing into summer, a time of intense activity and great potential. Seaview Gardens is hanging out a shingle. On the well cover are some small, early blooming white irises. On the ground are two side cuttings from a very large, bluish hosta with leaves that look quilted at maturity, and self sown seedlings of Rosa Rubiginosa, the Red Leafed Rose, a species rose also known as Rosa Glauca. A species rose is an original wild type that reproduces itself by self pollinated seedlings.
Talking about deer protection
Recently a deer has started feeding in our yard. These photos show the results of its pruning activity on yews, euonymus and emerging tulips
I’ve been making room in my shop by organizing and getting rid of things. What can be seen here is floor space which I will need when I bring in my little car for body work next week.
Something else has passed this way....
Decent weather has returned and so have I - back to finish cutting the privet......
