Transport to Ontario by Van! With the cancelations of flights for out of Province transport, and dogs held back due to illness, we had our fosters full of dogs ...waiting to leave. In an effort to alleviate this list of dogs, Katelyne from 4 Lucky Paws Animal Rescue volunteered to drive to Winnipeg and pick up dogs for all the Rescues and transport back to Ontario. They also brought in a van full of donations of food supplies and medical supplies. This has given us more room to help as many as we can before the last out of Province trip next week. Most of the Dogs pictured here have new adopted homes already! Please check out 4 Lucky Paws Animal Rescue, Niagara Dog Rescue, Alliston & District Humane Society, Save Our Scruff. Huge Thank you to Heather and Lisa who made wonderful lucnh food and snacks for the drivers! Thank you to our fosters for the hard work with medical cases and longer tern puppies until they were healthy enough to travel. Driving this time of year begins to get difficult out of Province with winter weather and the chances of being held up in bad driving conditions. We try to move as many as possible to Ontario when we can as Manitoba Rescues fill up fast. When we all work together, we can share the medical cases, retire seniors to forever under rescue, and alleviate rescues here as much as possible before winter. #GivingTuesdayCA #maadogs See more

Looking for our dog. She broke her chain when we put her out for a pee this afternoon. She has been missing since 11am. Lucy is a timid dog, friendly, but cautious around people. She is very playful with other animals. We live close to the Highschool.

SPREAD THE WORD Will you be traveling by plane between Winnipeg and Vancouver, Toronto or Ottawa? If so, we need your help Please consider being a FLIGHT... COMPANION to help animals get to the their forever homes and/or help us bring our crates back to Winnipeg, so that we can help more animals. We currently don't have any large or extra large crates left. It is an act of generosity that costs nothing but means everything. COVID-19 has significantly impacted our ability to transport animals to our partner rescues in other provinces. When many people were flying, we were able to transport many more animals in a much shorter time. With winter starting, the race is on to bring in as many animals as possible and for that to happen we need to have foster homes available. Being a flight companion and/or returning our crates to us helps us to free up more foster homes to help save more lives. For more information, email: [email protected] Thank you so much for your consideration.

Balloons do not go to heaven. They land in the ocean and choke sea turtles, kill dolphins and whales, and the ribbons entangle birds. Many times, they end up on... a beach as litter. Even the ones marked "biodegradable" can hurt animals before they have a chance to break down. Animals far from the ocean, such as horses, have been hurt and killed by balloons (they eat them when they land in their hay or they get spooked and bolt). Some balloons have started fires when they got entangled in power lines. Sky lanterns have set homes, power lines, trees, and buildings on fire. Sky lanterns can also entangle an animal even if it is marketed as "biodegradable." There are many safe alternatives to releasing litter into the air, such as planting a tree for your loved one and watching it bloom, or blowing bubbles into the air. Grief is a painful process. In our grief, we do not need to cause others grief. While there are many environmental problems facing our planet, this is a very simple one to solve. #wildaware #balloons #balloonsblow #nature See more

The United by Animals team has been busy this week working for the well-being of animals! Over 50 dogs and puppies arrived at our Provincial Animal Transfer Hub... in Midland Tuesday after a long journey to find homes. Once they are ready for adoption, they will be available via the Ontario SPCA’s website at ontariospca.ca/adopt or via the Welland & District Humane Society. Along with the animal transport, the Ontario SPCA’s community engagement team brought up 5,000 lbs of pet food, which was generously donated by Pet Valu, to share with our friends in Northern communities, where access to basic animal wellness services, including food, can be limited. #UnitedByAnimals

Today was not a good day with the phone calls we received and the verbal abuse for not being able to do what the people thought we as a rescue should do....they do not understand that you can do only do so much with the very few people we have helping out here. Just makes you want to pack it it in. BUT...then I walked into the room and saw this picture....the adult cat is Hilary....remember she was hit by a car....had 5 kittens...we put 3 with another Mom and let her raise tw...o while we tried to save her leg? Trevor paid for most of her vet care....after fighting a year, we had to have the leg amputated and he was afraid she would not find a home so I adopted her for his birthday....remember? We have raised numerous kittens in what is supposed to be our home and she has been fine with them because the Moms were with them. There are 3 "wobbly" kittens we will be adopting so we can be sure they have what they need. It seems Hillarys Mom instincts are taking over...they can clean themselves just fine but she makes sure on each one! Imagine what a world we would have if people were like our animals are! See more

This handsome boy was recently adopted from Ky Humane. His new owners decided that he should be declawed. They only had him for 1 week and within that 1 week,... they adopted him, cut off his toes and then abandoned him at another shelter because he wouldnt use the litter box. He is in pain. His feet are swollen and his refusal to use a litter box maybe a permanent behavioral issue that could put his life in jeopardy. Declawing is a horrible procedure that can effect cats mentally and physically. Do your research!! See more

Four 10 week old puppies have been with SCPN for 10 days, 13 more spent last nite here while 5 more overnighted at Hillcrest Animal Clinic and the rest drove in to meet the transfer vehicles this morning. Many thanks to the OSPCA and their amazing people for coming all this way to help out our animals!!

As a veterinarian, this statement kills a little piece of my soul, every time I hear it: I just want to let my dog have one litter Then take your pick on the ...next sentence, I’ve heard so many variations over the last 20 years. None of the explanations make me feel better, particularly when I know that all the education, pleading and explaining I do, it will not make a difference. "Because I love her so much" "Because it will make her a better pet" "Because I want to allow my kids to experience the miracle of birth" "Because I can make a lot of money from having pups" Really? I sometimes wonder if, as a society, we have advanced at all. Now, before you get out the pitchforks, those of you who know me or follow my work know that I support both responsible rescue and responsible breeders. And yes, I strongly believe you can do both. The key word is responsible. The statement at the outset of this post, Just One Litter is not responsible. It never was. And it never will be. Just one litter is the reason that overpopulation exists in this country. Too many people are too concerned about what is right for ME and don't care at all about WE. ‘Me’ disregards the thousands of animals who need good homes, who are running loose, in shelters, in foster homes or are abandoned by no fault of their owner. ‘Me’ disregards the fact that all these animals need homes but there are not enough of them. ‘Me’ disregards the fact that veterinarians see suffering animals every single day. We get phone calls about wandering animals, injured, lost, forgotten, uncared for. We stretch resources to help them. ‘Me’ disregards all the good Samaritan who find these animals and bring them to us to fix. And the toll it takes on them. ‘Me’ disregards the fact that shelters are over-run and under-funded and see this suffering too, every day, with no end in sight. ‘Me’ disregards the fact that animals are humanely euthanized every. single. day. because there is no place for them and no money left to provide them with care. And the guilt of those faced with this difficult decision. ‘Me’ disregards the fact that vets, rescues, shelters and animal lovers all over the country are breaking their backs to make a difference for the unwanted animals out there, brought into this world by irresponsible humans. ‘Me’ disregards all of this and more. ‘We’, as a society, have a social responsibility to uphold. We are responsible for caring for the animals that share our Earth. We are responsible for the animals we CHOOSE to bring into this world. Being responsible means that we need to stop enabling backyard breeders. We need to stop enabling animals being shipped in from other countries. We need to stop enabling puppy mills. We need to stop having ‘just one litter’. We need to support responsible rescues and responsible breeders. Yes, you can do both. I feel strongly that there is a place for both. We can make a difference by asking the right questions. We can stop our enabling behaviour. We can make changes in our laws. We can start speaking with our dollars and our voices. We can insist that breeders are held to the highest standards and do all the necessary testing before making the decision to breed or NOT to breed. We can insist that our rescues make humane choices for the animals in their care. Because at some point in my lifetime, I want to reach a place where I, as a veterinarian, no longer need to give the responsible pet ownership ‘talk’. I want it to be as universally known as what that red stop sign means. I want to quit losing a little piece of my soul. I want to know that WE have made a difference in the lives of those who can not speak for themselves. Please share if you believe WE can make a difference. And when you share it, please tell others what you do to create change!

(These ferals) are not my problem and I shouldnt have to fix them! How many times have we seen this comment from someone complaining about feral cats in the...ir yard? Raise your hands!! I want to ask these people one question... What makes you think WE have to fix them?? Ill be crystal clear here. I NEVER wanted more than two indoor cats. If you had told me six years ago that Id be caring for FOURTEEN cats, I would have told you, no way! Then this little Casanova brought his pregnant girlfriend to my yard. And I honestly didnt want to deal with it. I had just lost my father. Everything in our house and my life was falling apart. My Pennys diabetes was unregulated and my Weeny was dying of mast cell cancer. I am JUST as busy as the next person. But you know what? SOMEBODY has to care. These unfixed and unwanted cats and kittens are NO more MY fault than they are YOURS. IM not the one who failed to spay or neuter my cat. I have ALWAYS spayed and neutered every pet Ive ever had as soon as they were old enough. But someone needs to care. Those feral cats didnt ask to be turned out when their irresponsible owners moved away and left them behind. Those feral cats didnt ask to be born under a barn in the wild. But somebody has to care enough to be a part of the SOLUTION. So I stepped up. And I promise you this, if I hadnt stepped up to help them and break the endless cycle of unwanted kittens, the 14 cats I care for would have been HUNDREDS of cats by now. If you cant be a part of the solution, please stop complaining about the problem. And stop laying blame on these cats and the people who spend THEIR TIME and THEIR MONEY to control the feral population and start placing the blame where it BELONGS... With the irresponsible pet owners who dont spay and neuter their pets and then dump the unwanted kittens back in the woods or in a known feral cat colony... With the backyard breeders... With the people who take a kitten because its cute, fail to fix it, and then get rid of it when the novelty wears off or when the cat goes in heat or urine marks... With those who fail to fix their cats and then move away without their cat, leaving their cat to breed endlessly and fend for herself. THESE are the people you need to harrass. NOT those who work endlessly and selflessly to fix the problem that SOMEBODY ELSE created. Enough

Yesterday was rough. Really rough. In the wake of Rosemarys passing, we did some deep digging to find her original home so that we can sterilize the cats there... in her honor. Sonja and I spent about an hour on site, and while I cannot go into detail about what we saw, it feels important to express to you how angry and sad we were to see where she was from. We learned that Rosemary was actually one of six babies born right here in this succulent plant. One was already dead when discovered, one died shortly after; we took in the other four, and now we are left with only the three surviving siblings. This is the reality: kitten mortality outdoors is high, and for every kitten we see, there are so many more who we dont. I look at my solo kittens like Flower and wonder how many of her siblings had to suffer and die on the street before she was found alive and alone. It is crushing. Did you know that 80% of kittens born annually are born outdoors? We have got to do more to prevent this. At the colony, we saw the mama cat (a beautiful tortie just like Rosemary) as well as a large family of aunts and uncles. These cats are breeding exponentially in the area they are being fed. Feeding cats is kind, and those who feed do have their heart in the right place. But if you are feeding cats, you have a responsibility to get them sterilized. And if you are an advocate who knows about cats living in your community, you have a choice to allow them to continue breeding...or to take action and get them TNRed. Allowing them to breed leads to the constant cycle of birth and deaththe creation of kittens who will die in flower pots, be euthanized in shelters, or pass away in the hands of a rescuer like me. But it doesnt have to be like this. If there are cats in your neighborhood, GET THEM STERILIZED. Trap-Neuter-Return is fun, easy, and lifesaving. Do it for Rosemary. Do it for Rosemarys siblings who never had the dignity of a name. Do it to prevent suffering. To alleviate the pain that rescuers feel taking in sick kitten after sick kitten. To change the world for felines. Learn how to TNR the cats in your neighborhood at bit.ly/howtoTNR #TNRforrosemary

My name is 109. I have lived in a puppy mill for 6.5 years. I have had 11 litters of puppies and made my owner over $30,000. To show his gratitude, he has never... bathed or brushed me....he has never placed a kind hand on me. I have never seen a vet or felt grass under my feet. The only time I am out of my 2x3 crate is when i am bred by force. I get a little more food and a cleaner pen when i have my babies. I am happy for awhile but by 4 weeks they take my pups away to sell them online and at pet stores and I am alone again back in my crate. The wire floor in my crate has caused me to have permanent deep painful groves in my pads. My nails are so long I cant walk on a hard surface. Today, we were rescued... I am so scared, but I experienced something I have never heard before... a soft gentle voice. #ADOPTDONTSHOP * Via Rachel J Levy Ejsmont

DISPOSABLE MASKS ARE NOT DISPOSABLE! Theyre made of plastic fibers and are not at all biodegradable. They can take about 450 years to degrade - and afterwards ...they enter the ecosystem as harmful microfibers. Almost every living sea organism has microfibers in their bodies...and that enters the food chain. So they never really go away. We are making our plastic problem worse by using these masks. They end up in landfills or are flushed into our rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. One report said that there are more masks than jellyfish in the waters of off the Cot dAzur, France. Some whale species eat them, and then die of starvation and gut impaction, thinking they are consuming jellyfish. Incineration is not the answer either, as toxic fumes can be released into the environment, if not done properly. Media photos are emerging of sea birds with their wings and feet hopelessly entangled in discarded masks. If you must use, cut the loops, just as you cut six pack rings. But reusable cloth masks ARE the environmentally friendly choice! Disposable must be last choice, and must be discarded properly. Ecologists say that sea animals that ingest them can die from gut obstruction. Theyre a bigger threat to our environment and wildlife than they are an infection hazard. And maybe a bigger threat than protection against COVID. Why, you ask? What are we inhaling when we wear disposable masks?? Probably plastic microfibers. So, be a friend to nature and simply say NO to these disposable masks! Get a friend to sew you a few reusable cloth masks or buy them cheaply in certain fabric stores. The wildlife have suffered enough. Lets not continue our attack against nature by using disposable masks. - KjEpp
