Hello Belmont and Aylmer Friends!! Some of you may know my Uncle Brent James who has been a resident of Lyons for about 30 years. You may not know his name, but have likely seen the 6’7 red-headed man walking down Imperial Rd in all kinds of weather wearing shorts! About 10 years ago, Uncle Brent was diagnosed with Lebers Disease, a rare genetic condition that affects runs in my Great Grandma Campbell’s (MacLennan) matrilineal line of descent. Leber’s Disease causes a loss of... peripheral eyesite and has left Uncle Brent legally blind. A fundraising effort is underway to help raise money for necessary repairs to his home and other needs. *** Leber’s Disease has affected my Great-Grandmother’s branch of the MacLennan family greatly. A male in each of the three generations proceeding her has suffered from the genetic condition; My Great Uncle Roger, my Uncle Brent, and now in my generation, my cousin Dustin. Further to that, the gene has been carried by mom and six of her female cousins threatening the loss of eyesite in their sons and has been carried on again by myself and five other female cousins in our generation. From that, my daughter Maggie has become a carrier for her generation, and on and on and on. In our branch of the family, Leber’s Disease has thus far only affected male offspring of female carriers, but in other generations and other branches of MacLennan’s females too have lost their vision. My Uncle Brent worked for years at Wadco Windows, Aylmer Glass and Secord’s Home Building Centre in Aylmer. This disease has robbed him of the things he loved: riding bikes with his son Wesley, refinishing and restoring antique furniture, building anything and everything and his 1980’s fueled passion for Frisbee. It has deprived him of his ability to work and drive and although he says that he gets along pretty well for a blind guy, the condition has altered his entire life. If anyone knows him or is willing to help, please see the information posted by my cousin Nancy on how to donate time, money or supplies it would be greatly appreciated!
