As part of Wasat’s Guest Speaker Series we are happy to have Imam Dawud Walid join us on February 19th at 7pm PST for a discussion about his new book Blackness ...and Islam. Register here: linktr.ee/wearewasat Details about the class: Muslims who are Black in the West in particular, have found that while Islam may not discriminate based on race, many Muslims do. To make matters worse, some of those Muslims will delve into that Islamic tradition to justify their biases and bigotries, seeing no contradiction between their racism and the Islamic ideals. This work seeks to clarify and debunk some traditions which support their racist positions, and presents biographies of early Muslims who were Black. The biographies of these great Muslim personalities shows us how Blackness was a normal part of life for early Muslims, in sharp contradistinction to modern prejudices against Black folks found in some Muslim communities. Table of Contents: Chapter 1 - What is Blackness? Chapter 2 - Black Figures in the Qur’an Chapter 3 - Clarifying Problematic Narrations & Verdicts Relating to Blackness Chapter 4 - Companions of the Prophet who were Black Chapter 5 - Virtues of Ahl al-Bayt & Blackness Chapter 6 - Biographies About the Ahl al-Bayt Questions that will be explored: * Is this focus on Blackness in Islam a new genre or type of innovation in our tradition? * What did Blackness mean to Arabs 14 centuries ago? * Was enslavement race based during the during the lifetime of the Prophet? * What resources do we have from our tradition that can help us heal our communities and societies from anti-black racism?
