Self-Heal Herbs 11.09.2020

http://www.selfhealherbs.ca/november17-elder/ Take a look at our herb of the month, and the last tree of the celtic calendar (nov 25th-dec 23rd) " As the days get darker, wetter, colder, not only are we seeing more folks dealing with colds and flus, but also noticing that it is a time of going more inwards, reflecting on a the more extroverted, energetic time that has passed, and perhaps where we want to go from here. In these times, it seems the allure of lore, story, myth ...and magic grow as well. Perhaps one of the most steeped in enchanting folklore and mysterious myth, Elder heals and inspires.".... be well,

"I am the hallow-tide of all souls passing, I am the bright releaser of all pain, I am the quickener of the fallen seed-case, I am the glance of snow, the strike of rain, I am the hollow of the winter twilight,... I am the hearth-fire and the welcome bread, I am the curtained awning of the pillow, I am the unending wisdoms golden thread." Song of Samhain from Celtic Devotional: Daily Prayers and Blessings by Caitlin Matthews Looking for some herby celebrations of the hallows eve season? Rosemary for remembrance of the ancestors Blessed thistle for protection Mugwort for vision ...and herbal ancestry exploration... So fun! Some herb meanderings on Rosehips.. In traditional medicine, all parts ( petals, sepals, hips, stalks, roots, root bark, thorns) of both wild and domesticated rose have been used in many different preparations. As we turn into fall, the bright red beacon of the rose hips appear. Along with ripening hawthorn. Im brought to the scene of long fallen hay coloured grasses, leaves of browns and yellows and oranges and still some greens, barks darkening with dampness, and on those... treasured days, a crisp blue sunny sky..all dapple with gems of bright red hips and the smell of cool clean air that kisses your face and urges you to bundle up and hold your loves and losts close to your heart. I like to think this scene is perhaps pointing to some of the medicine of the rosehips. Rosehips offer us nourishment, healing for the heart, cooling excess heat and excitement (think a sweet breath of fresh fall air) and astringency (toning up tissues and strengthening boundaries within). The hips are so deliciously vibrant, I almost forget the sweet perfume of the petals that precede them. The hips feel mature, rich and hopeful. As the season turns, many of us are prone to colds and flus as we adjust. Rose hips can be drank as tea, or made into a syrup as a vitamin rich and preventative immune tonic. While also can assist in acute inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract such as a sore throat, runny or stuffed nose, irritative cough. When the mucus membranes could be dried and cooled down. Matthew wood recommends rose hip (and rose petals) for "chronic inflammation, convalescence, old age, and delicate children" as well as cooling digestive heat (diarrhea, dysentery, and more stubborn inflammation). Could also help repair damage to gut flora after the use of antibiotics! Rosehips can be helpful for those with iron deficiency, because of their nutrient content and because the b vitamins and vit c help with absorption. Along with its immune boosting, cardiovascular toning, digestive healing nutrient rich profile, rose has a long history of its lessons of the emotional heart and of teaching boundaries. Robin rose Bennet describes rose as helping to strengthen boundaries without closing your heart, and to better see the view of another- something I think most of us could use a hand with these days. More of a full profile on rosehips to come! As well as a new herb of the month to be posted on our website! May you all be well!

Great article on the connection between trauma and gut health, microbiome, digestion, inflammation and the gut-brain axis. Another way to look at nourishing your self! Includes some herbal suggestions and recipes Traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies: The past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert a...t ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves. "When trauma has impacted the gut, plants act as mediators and keys for transformation" http://herbsformentalhealth.com/trauma-the-gut-and-healing/

Fun Fact! Elecampane - also known as Horse Heal and Marchalan - is a plant common in Great Britain, central and southern Europe, and Asia. Elecampane, has been long valued as an effective respiratory support herb, even being listed in the U.S. Pharmacopeia. Traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine used it for bronchitis and asthma, as did ancient Greeks and Romans. In the 1800s, lozenges, candy, and cough drops were all produced from elecampane root.... Elecampane has actions, which are expectorant, anti-tussive, sedative, anti-fungal, relaxing, warming, and anti-microbial. It can soothe bronchial tube linings and act as an expectorant for lung cleansing. For this reason, elecampane may be beneficial in supporting any respiratory condition which produces copious mucus discharge Oh, the goodness of plants!
