On the last Saturday of November, Selkirk College brought together 70 screens from across the region for its Virtual Community Celebration. Subbing in for the a...nnual Selkirk College Gala, students and staff put on an hour-plus showcase of talents featuring the Professional Cook Training Program, Resort & Hotel Management Program and the Contemporary Music & Technology Program. Recipes were shared, music was enjoyed and appropriate current-time connections were made amongst supporters of remarkable regional post-secondary. Thanks to all those who joined us on Saturday night! Selkirk College looks forward to resuming the larger in-person Gala event when safe to do so in future years. Safety for students, staff and the community is the number-one priority at #SelkirkCollege as we prepare for the Fall Semester that begins in September. With st...rict adherence to health and safety guidelines put forward by the Provincial Health Officer, delivery of programs currently running and those set to start next month includes in-person, online, remote and hybrid/blended. The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training has released its COVID-19 Go-Forward Guidelines for B.C.’s Post-Secondary Sector which provides an overarching plan for protocols across the province. Prepared by a panel of experts across the sector (including Selkirk College Health & Safety Advisor Donna Drover) and partners in all areas, the document lays out what is expected from individual institutions: The goal of these protocols is to support the gradual increase of in-person teaching, learning, research, administrative and support services at post-secondary institutions while reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Working with the Ministry, Selkirk College has prepared its own Return to Campus Guidelines which are just one part of the overall plan that aims to keep students, staff and faculty safe and moving forward. Safety the responsibility of everyone and individual efforts ensure successful execution. You can find both Selkirk College planning documents and the Ministry guidelines at: https://selkirk.ca/COVID-safe

COVID-19 impacts each and every one of us. Challenges are only magnified for those with limited resources. The Financial Aid Office at Selkirk College has exper...ienced a drastic increase in student requests, as many struggle to pay rent and afford the basic necessities to get through the next couple months. With our partners, Selkirk College has combined resources to develop a relief fund for students at this unprecedented time. The current level of emergency funding available is not enough to meet student demand. If your circumstances allow, please consider making a gift today. Selkirk College Foundation will match the first $30,000 in donations made to the COVID-19 Student Relief Fund. Together, we can help. In these challenging times, Selkirk College team members are continuing their dedicated service to both students and the community. Last week, Campus Life Coord...inator Claire Hewson and Ancillary Services Manager Jonathan Langille were busy helping our learners in Student Housing and health care workers at our local hospitals. With campus food banks closed, Claire and her student-led Healthy Campus team needed to think outside the box about how to support students in a time of need. She went to the grocery store and bought items in bulk and split up a variety of food items (pasta, beans, canned fruit, granola bars) into individual bags. The bags were dropped off at student housing in Nelson and Castlegar. With in-person teaching our campuses now suspended and students moved to alternative delivery methods, Jonathan rounded up essential personal protection equipment (gloves, face masks and face shields) and cleaning supplies from campus areas like Food Services, Maintenance and the School of Industry & Trades Training. With a truck full of supplies, he dropped the donated items to Kootenay Lake Hospital nurse Rosanna Sheppard who will add the materials to the frontline inventory. As our regional health care system takes action on the COVID-19 pandemic and prepares for the difficult days ahead, the #SelkirkCollege School of Health & Human... Services donated several boxes of supplies used in learning. With our instruction moved to alternative delivery methods, faculty donated a large amount of essential supplies including non-sterile gloves, gowns, hand sanitizer, barrier face masks (non-N95), masks with face shields and Cavi-wipes (surface disinfectant). Students in all our School of Health & Services programs are continuing to get the education, skills and training required to start vital careers. Thank you to everyone on the frontlines of our health care system who are undertaking this extraordinary effort today. Your tireless work and courage in these times is a true gift to our communities.
